Building wardrobes which extend beyond surface

My girlfriend wants new wardrobes, all she has at present are coat rails which she uses with hangers.

She wants them either side of a fireplace / chimney which has been covered over.

I would be confident to make and install shelving, and if the wardrobe doors were flush with the fireplace, I'd be happy enough with it.

The problem is that, even now, the clothes on the rail protrude beyond the level of the wardrobe. So I am thinking of building it out beyond the level of the fireplace.

My initial thoughts are to get MDF, secure that to the fireplace edge and walls, build the shelves onto that, and secure the doors onto it.

Any other way that anyone could suggest?

Hard to go past this for simplicity

.you need a shell and then doors. You could go crazy with drawers too if you feel your up to it.

Have a look at IKEA catalogue.

IKEA do 35cm deep wardrobes, which will go either side of a chimney. They have all the same accessories in the shallow dept.
