    a Quick Question :
a friend of mine has a 2016 Corolla diesel ( manual) and when she was driving on the M50 it suddenly lost power and she had to go to the hard shoulder. I was unable to find out if it was an total electrical failure or just that the engine died

After a few minutes she was able to restart the car and continue home. She is afraid to drive it now and has it booked into a Toyota garage to investigate what went wrong.

Is anyone aware of any recalls on the Corolla for loosing power and shutting down suddenly >

Could be a carbon buildup in the pistons? How many miles in it and are they city or motorway?

could be many things.... but if the car has stop/start feature then make sure that the clutch wasn't been 'ridden' and the car coasting

Check the fuel pump in the tank, the gauze might be blocked up with gunge from poor quality diesel and check the fuel filter isn’t blocked/ in need of replacement.

Did the engine management light come on at that time?

Something very similiar happened with my wifes 151 Corolla diesel last year. Car conked out and wouldn't start for about 45 mins. Then started like nothing was wrong. Garage checked it out and found nothing wrong. It was put down to dirty diesel as she had filled it from empty the day before. It hasn't happened since then and there has nearly 20k kms done since.
