Bought Micro SD - now what?

    Hi all,
I have a HP laptop. I kept getting message that there was no memory left. Only had a small 32 GB. I bought it about 4 years ago.

I dont have any files stored (e.g., movies or pics) so I dont know how the hard drive is full. I use it mainly to browse. I did download Treesize, but no clue how to use it. I cant even figure out how to delete temp internet files (I assume these file have accumulated over the years).

Anyhoo, I bought a Micro SD card today. And inserted it into laptop. Can see the new drive - I just dont know what to do with it / put onto it, or tell the laptop to use this card to save its files to.

    Anyone any ideas/help?

How many drives on the laptop. Is there a c and d drive .
If it's c only best move pics etc to the cloud.
If both then move files to d.
Final option transfer media files to your new SD card

This isnt the answer you want but: Replace the machine.

HP selling that is kinda like VW selling a Golf with a 0.5L fuel tank. It doesnt make sense, its a con.

Without even asking the model # we can guess its a 32GB eMMC soldered on chip, cant be upgraded and is useless. Windows cant really function on that and every 3-6mo itll run out of space and get stuck during a feature update.

Lots of €150-200 glorified calculators on offer with these, avoid.

I have it 4 years and I havent installed anything bar Treesize (which I ironically dont know how to use).

I use it to browse internet only. Never had an issue till last 6 months.

I assume there is a backlog of old temp internet files or something somewhere that need to be deleted.

Says I have Windows 8.1 with Bing (never updated).

Can I move some system programs onto the SD card to free up space on hard drive?

Edit: SD card works (I copied Treesize on to it) I dont know else how to use it/what to put on it.

It sounds like you're trying to make windows behave like an android phone? As in, you are trying to move programmes onto the sd card.

Replacing it is the best solution but Reinstalling windows should free up space.

Lads-I dunno if you can get from my opening post...I dont know what I am doing.

The laptop said it was low on memory. I google "how to get memory". I went to shop and bought SD card. I inserted the SD card.

Windows 8.1. Use it only to browse internet. No pics, no vids - nothing saved.

    I have also downloaded Treesize.

    Could someone help me on:
What do I do with the SD card (it is in the laptop, primed to work)
What do I do with Treeportable?

Replacing "it" - what is "it"? Laptop is only worth about e50 - it works fine for my needs, bar the memory issue.
    How do I reinstall windows?

Why does it have an SD card slot if I cant use it?

The card slot is for copying files off digital cameras etc. It simply saves people having to hook their devices up with cables or using a card reader. Laptops don't use memory cards in the same way phones do.

The only thing that card is good for now is to copy files off your laptop to free up space. But given the spec you've outlined, it's unlikely to help much.

Thanks Ursus. Luckily it was only e12 card then!

I dont know what to do with the low on memory laptop. Note book is probably the more accurate. It was only e150 4 years ago.

Seems only option is to just buy a new one? It work perfect bar the memory issue...

You could try something like Bleachbit I suppose https://sourceforge.net/projects/bleachbit/

Install TeamViewer and I'll log onto it and sort it out in a couple of mins.

    Install and run CCleanerhttps://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner?source=cpc&gclid=CjwKCAjwlovtBRBrEiwAG3XJ-7w9UC6TVIv3SMHV4Y9NNbOw2-lFU9kDcNDncO2L2WqWB_DLoK4s0hoCR7oQAvD_BwE

Its simple quick and easy, and very safe.
Select analyse, (uncheck saved passwords if you want to keep them), Run Cleaner.
Will probably free up a large amount of space.

Delete the programmes you don't use

32 gb is just too small to deal with windows and windows updates really and will lead to continual frustration

reinstalling windows from scratch would yield the best results

    I'd budget for an upgrade

Even buying a good second-hand laptop unit on adverts with an ssd and i3, 6gb ram for €120 or so like this

    https://www.adverts.ie/laptops/fast-toshiba-laptop-i3/18852607

would be a huge upgrade and not a bank-breaker.

If you're just using for web browsing then a decent tablet or Chromebook would be a better buy. You can use your new sd card with most of them for extra storage.
