Iam a foreigner residing in Ireland.Recently,I had an experience in relation to a job.I have contacted several offices in Cork for a work experience and nobody showed interest in that. But,One Chartered Accountant in Cork told me to come to his office for a discussion after sending my resume to him.We had a one hour talk and he told me to do a certification course which costs 299 euro and get back to him. He also promised me that he will assess me for several weeks and he will pay me for that weeks.I beleived his words, took the certification and I have mailed him my certificate. But I didn't see any reply from him . After one day I called him back and he talked to me as if he forgot everything he told about and told me that he saw my certificate and he needs me to take Advanced certificate for that course.I was Blank when I heard that.I have asked him at the begining when I enroled that which course I should go for.He told me to do the Basic one.I felt very dissapointed after this.

What should I do next.In your opinion what was his intension or why did he do this to me.?

He took an interest in you and was advising you. Is one way to look at it. No one else seemed to care. I'm not an accountant so haven't a clue about the course but the course has improved your education /knowledge and the advanced one will improve it more. I'd imagine you were going to have to do these courses anyway to make yourself stand out. You already said no one was interested in the qualifications you had.

I don't know if he was leading you up the garden path or not but I'm betting you are better because of the course. I doubt you did a useless course that you won't need

Yes I accept that. But I have enough experience in another country and Iam easily adaptive . The Problem is I should atleast get a 1 experience here.

I liked his advice. But at the time when I did the course i got another job, but not related to accounts.I didnt go for that.I trusted his words .

Why would he say, he will give me a couple of weeks assessment in his office..

In Ireland people often don’t literally mean what they say. People say things to sound nice or helpful even if these things are not true. Straight talking is rare in Ireland. Generally, if you don’t have an agreement in writing then there is no agreement.

    Yes,may be but I lost my 299 Euro...Though I have a certificate,but a huge hope was destroyed in a second

I can't answer this. I don't think anyone can except him. I feel bad for you but I do think sending you on the course was doing you a favour. I don't doubt your ability but not being from Ireland might be a slight disadvantage (I'm only guessing here) & the extra courses might give you the advantage you need.

We all have knocks and setback in life. It's a person's ability to pick themselves up & dust themselves off that sets them apart from the average person.

Fingers crossed you pick up a good job soon

I just realised that this is a duplicate thread from after hours. After hours is a fun thread. It's unlikely you will taken seriously there and most likely you will be made fun of. If I were you I would ask a mod to close the other thread and stick with the this one

Yes ,Sure Iam not concerned about the certificate.Yes,as you said it is useful to me .But being unemployed a 299 euro course at the moment was hard for me. I took it only because he said he will give a Paid assessment for some weeks.

Click the report button on your first post in the after hours thread and ask the mods to close it.

One possibility for you not getting the work experience could be that the person who suggested giving you the trial decided your level of English (written/spoken) was not good enough for an environment such as an accountancy practice. Would you consider looking into some lessons?

Yes,Iam trying to improve.Being not a native speaker, how can I improve my English if nobody is giving me an oppurtunity to improve my english.I believe if i go to some other jobs and talking with people helps me to improve my language.
I went for a 3 months course in bookkeeping and has some Irish friend and I used to talk to them to improve my english. Thats all what I can do.

I'm sure there are at least online courses you could do? I work in a global environment where ican often be the only native English speaker in meetings, and the standard of your English would not be enough for that environment let alone the likes of an Irish accountancy practice.

Many libraries host free English conversation groups - maybe this could help with your English?
