    Hi,
Can't get a VRT booking, called them up also and they said they have no slots until next week at the earliest.

Is this common? Are there that many cars coming into the country?

Seems bizarre, first car I'm importing.

Maybe I'm missing something, you say you can't get a booking, but they have slots next week?

OP, what rock are you living under for the last 3 years or so? With the weak pound and Brexit, half the country are importing used cars from the UK. You are doing well getting a booking for next week, grab it with both hands.

Are you serious? its friday, next week sounds perfectly fair

No I don't meant next week for availability, I mean there are no slots available for any time in the future until next week. No slots, nothing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,213 ✭✭✭PrettyBoy

I brought a car in a couple of weeks ago and had the VRT appointment today, didn't think a near 2 week wait was bizarre in the slightest - did you think they were going to give you an appointment for the next day?

You are aware that the pound has been at it's lowest for years and that in a few weeks it might be considerably more difficult to bring a UK car into Ireland?

Yeah but you have 30 days to register it.

Again completely missing the point, you cannot make an appointment for any time in the future either online or by phone. Any date between now and end of days.
And I never said I expected an appointment the next day.
I said it's bizarre you cannot make an appointment full stop, that's bizarre for an online booking system.
    Penny drop yet??

Got my car done last week. I had to wait 10 days but I had no problem getting an appointment once I was flexible on where I went

That is strange alright, If they are that busy then they should just stretch the appointments further out into the future.
It may have something to do with the possible preparations of October 31 cut off date for a no deal Brexit and with it the possible introduction of VAT and Duty.
Print off the online message you get for proof if ever needed.

You're really not doing a good job of explaining your issue - are you trying to say that you can't make an appointment for a specific day and time of your choosing?

My god, what he's saying is fairly simple.

OP - can I make an appointment?
Vrt - no, ring back next week.

Their system must be only able to show a certain amount of future appointments and they're all full.

That's common this last year. Just ring every day, appointments open up on a daily basis.

It's normal OP, its especially busy now that the brexit deadline is this month.most centres are open 7 days a week and cannot keep up with demand. Bookings will open monday or Tuesday for 2 weeks time. You're most likely on a long list of people trying to get in.

Same thing for me OP. I'd be happy to take a booking at any time in the next few weeks but nothing available. The booking system is not as good as for NCT bookings, i.e. You don't get offered availability at nearby centres, or at more than a week out of seems.

An interesting development seeing as we have 30 days to comply with the law but probably more important is I have 40 days max to stay insured on the UK reg.

There are bookings up until the 27th of October, its fully booked everywhere. A lot of garages are panic bulk booking appointments.

Yes, if you can find an appointment .

It took over 30 days for me in Cork, car was in the state for 37 days by time i had my appointment. If you ring up they will take your details and text back with an appointment slot.

I did, just some can't grasp language.
Also not so nice from you after me helping you out with your distilled water problem.
    Disappointing.........

I’m in Kerry and it’s the same thing, the massive problem with this is they don’t give you any choice with the timing of the slot which is the problem, they expect you to be 100% flexible to attend an appointment at a day / time of their choosing, some people have kids to get to school, pre planned doctor appointments, weddings etc and they expect you to drop everything.

If you say you can’t make an appointment they can’t give you any alternative and you wait another week to get an appointment again at their choosing two / three weeks out again. I’d say loads of people - myself included, are gone way past the 30 day cutoff

They finally took the booking today over the phone, so it will be within 2 weeks

Absurd system, but it is the public service.

I presume if there's another Brexit extension, things just stay the same for another while. But if Brexit actually happens on the 31st October, does anyone know what will be the exact position then? Have the government come out and said that there will definitely be duty/tariffs and VAT?
If I buy a two year old car in the UK after 31st October, EU VAT will have already been paid on it, as when the car was new, the UK was in the EU. So how can the Irish government then charge VAT again? I thought you couldn't be charged VAT twice on an item.
But then again, it's the government and the Revenue - they'll no doubt figure out some way to get their pound of flesh.
But do any Boardsies know the official position at the moment?

Apparently NCT vehicle registration backlog is now over 30 day period in which reg is to be completed. Any advice on how one can prove that a good faith effort was made to try and register within the time limit. I didn't think that a screen shot of the website showing no bookings available will suffice

    Thank you

Call log to the landline number where you tried to get a booking over the phone and failed as in my case
