Getting a quote of 218 dollars for a 1.4 astra for 10 days.

This seems very cheap and wondering if there is any hidden charges. Also lost my Irish license but have my US one.

I presume when I go to collect the car there going to add on insurance

Was there cdw coverage included in your rental when booked? If not then there will be insurance added unless your US credit card used for the booking can cover cdw. If thats an option most rental companies accept this as long as you have a letter from the provider stating the level of coverage and countries covered. You will also need a 5000 euro deposit to use credit card provided cdw.
If you go for enterprise provided cdw then the level of coverage purchased on the day determine the deposit paid.

Thats the only hidden fee I can think of that most people don't see.

Also most rental companies have an age limit that you must be over 25 or you will get hit with a fee.
Companies also have a rule that you must have a license for a certain amount of time so be sure you're good here with that too.

Many of these places gouge you if you want to drive to NI and make this less than clear.
Car rental needs to be regulated.

If you are renting in Dublin, Enterprise have been the best company I have rented from here. You will get charged extra if you want zero excess or you'll need to put a large holding on your card if you don't. But every rental company does this here.

    Sixth being the worst. FWIW

Do a full inspection of the car before taking it. Move it out of it’s parking space and inspect the back or front as appropriate. Take photos of any marks no matter how small.
Do this with any rental car.

If you are renting off a US website it doesn't include any insurance, get out the lube when you go to pickup the car

I second this, used Enterprise a few years ago, and even though we barely even looked into the back seat of the car, let alone use it, they charged us 200 quid for a small rip in the upholstery. Absolute gougers

He won't need to buy any if his American credit card covers it. A lot of them do.

I use it twice a year and never have any issues

Does that still require a 5K deposit? Limit on my CC is set to 2K as that is all I wanted.

Thanks for the feedback so far. My credit card does support insurance on car rental. Sweet!

I worked for Enterprise for 3 years, no need to go overkill on inspection, they’ll show you an e-tool (worn around the neck) which is repairable vs unrepairable damage.

Enterprise is the only company that will automatically refund you if the repair you’ve been deducted for is not completed within 90 days.

Most credit card companies have exclusions on CDW, Ireland is one of the handful of countries on this exclusion list, so get written confirmation from your card company that they will cover damage to the value of the vehicle in case of total loss, you’re not just covering standard excess when you don’t buy CDW, you are liable for the car in totality, likewise if you have a third party excess protection policy, you will be charged the excess on rental and refunded once you return the car with no repairable damage.

    Who exactly Polices this ?
I'm sure you are being honest (as you did work for them), but this just sounds like a marketing tool.
Is a Customer really going to go checking a car (that he probably won't even be able to find) three Months after he was charged a fee for body damage ?

I’m still confused over the insurance charges. If I hand in my us credit card will that do for insurance. I’m with Bank of America, it covers rentals.

I just don’t want to arrive pay the 200 dollars dollars and then have hidden charges of 400 or 500 or something or more!

Only with written confirmation that the coverage includes Ireland.

There’s a specific damage unit, the name of it escapes me, essentially if your excess is €1750 (as it was when I worked there anyway) and the repair invoice is €800, €950 will be refunded automatically.

You’ll get a copy of your damage report when you’re asked about new damage on return, bear in mind - who caused the damage is irrelevant, if you return the car with new damage, you are responsible for it, whether you know how it happened or not, you will be asked about the circumstances.

You'll need to check that with BoA on the cdw letter of coverage. Ring them and ask.
I have a Chase Sapphire Reserve and it does cover Ireland.

Not sure about enterprise but I know Avis/Budget and Sixt cover the 5k euro to use your own card cdw coverage, however I was also told the card company covers everything up to x value so you should still get it back if something happens.

Finally figured this out. The car is been booked for 10 days.

If I go to enterprise.COM and try to book the car (astra) it doesn’t include damage waiver automatically. Cost is 482 dollars with damage waiver added and with excess protection added at 14.82 a day it’s $719 .

However when I go to enterprise.IE damage waiver is automatically included in the price of the car and is €232 in total. Excess protection is an additional €21.60 a day so 448 euro in total.

Savings of 227 dollars from using the Irish site. (My credit card does not support damage waiver in Ireland, n Ireland, Israel and Jamaica)

Think I’ll have to pay a refundable deposit of 1750 regardless which I don’t mind.

You'll still have to buy cdw off enterprise regardless when you arrive at the counter in the airport.
The level of cdw you purchase off them determines how much of a deposit you will pay
