New Sky Dish

Although we haven’t been Sky customers for a few years we still use the Sky HD box for our viewing and recording of the FTA channels.

Anyway we live right on the coast and our dish and indeed bracket were rusted pretty badly and we lost signal completely this morning. I rang a local shop as it was handy and explained and they sent someone out this evening. One look and he knew it needed replacing.

The thing is I didn’t realize he works for Sky so he put up one of the Sky minion dishes with a new bracket etc (for a hefty price I thought but we wanted someone out quickly).

Anyway it’s done and dusted now but I think really I would have been better off getting someone to install a fibre glass dish or something similar? I’m sure 3 or 4 years down the line I’ll be replacing the dish again.

It’s the first time I used this shop, which I thought was an independent but obviously do contract work for Sky.

It’s working fine and all but I do feel like I could have spent my money more wisely.

You probably would have been better off signing up to sky for a year and getting a new set of free equipment

The fitter should hae realised it would rust, get him back and fit a better dish.

Those dishes aren't exclusive to Sky. They're widely available for anyone to fit.

Nah it would have cost a lot more that way and I’ve no interest signing up to Sky again.

He was a Sky installer helping out the shop when their installer was away.

I doubt they would change it out.

fair enough. you said it was a hefty price but for €288 you could have had it all installed and a sky package for a year with new equipment.

all depends on what your idea of a hefty price is though

Ah yeah apologies, he charged €169 to out put up a new dish and lnb, which I thought was a bit pricey.

More than happy with fta channels.

Just curious why you thought that was pricey ?

Maybe it wasn’t Tony? Is that about standard? I just remember getting one installed a few years ago for around €100. Maybe it is the going rate now.

No complaints about the installer at all.

Anyway I’ll get the life out of this one and next time look for someone to install a fibreglass dish.

Thanks for that. I don't think its too bad to be honest although really depends on what LNB was used and whether the dish mount had to be completely re drilled and cables re terminated. I think you will find the current sky dishes will last a lot longer as the coating seems to have improved over years , really hard to protect against the salt air though.

Hopefully you get a good few years out of it.
