Help, need diesel car for high mileage

I'm looking for recommendations for diesel car for approx 40k km or more per year. I have tall 9 year old in back seat and occasionally another adult in front.
I have top end budget of €16,500 (no trade in) rather spend less to be honest.
I need something economic to run & comfortable with a bit of get up and go. I was looking at maybe 1.6TDCI 120 focus titanium but I'm open to suggestions. I drive a Kia Ceed 1.6 diesel at the moment which I imported. Thanks a mill

Get something with a bit more poke and an auto box.
Octavia 2.0 TDI DSG or something.

E300 hybrids do well on fuel, mine gets 60mpg on cross country trips and the E class is a nice car to be in for all of those miles.

A 530d. That 40k will be a breeze. You'll suffer a little on mpg but make it back in free time. It's effortless driving. Something like this https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/bmw-530d-m-sport-131/23160961

With respect, a 530d will be ruinously expensive to maintain compared to a sausage and chips car like a Ceed.

I've an E300 estate and drive cross country and back every week. I've seen 4.9l/100km (57mpg) - once to be perfectly honest.

Apparently the estate is 5% worse than the saloon so 4.7l/100km (60mpg) that would be about right for the saloon.

It will do 5.6l/100km (50mpg) all day long at ~120kph on the motorway with not the most efficient tyres, which I'm perfectly happy with.

That said, I drove a 520d on the motorway before buying it and find the E class a nicer drive on the motorway, 520d better everywhere else.

Definitely depends on how you drive etc. I have the AMG model and tried an msport 5 before I bought, I didnt find much of a difference in the driving to be honest, the 5 was maybe a bit tighter in cornering at speed. I've actually found that I'm better behaved behind the wheel now that I have this car, compared to my last which was a 3 series that inspired all sorts of mischief!

The big turn off for me for the 5 series was running costs, if you need parts BMW want a limb and your firstborn. To be fair Mercedes arent that much cheaper but theres a difference that will add up over a few years. Big difference in the insurance though!

As you probably realised by now OP a lot on here are obsessed with bmw and the like. German cars are massivly overrated on the whole in ireland. I think a focus would be fine but you will find a mondeo more comfortable.

Seriously an Infinity Q30??? The OP would be stuck going to the UK if anything went wrong

Civic 1.6 is a a good bet, absolute miser in fuel

If your doing a lot of mileage you'd want comfort and a bit of power, in that case german brands have the best choices for that

    Kia Optima is worth considering.

Skoda Superb is a real mile muncher of a motor.
    Reliable, economical and very comfortable.

We’ve a Ford Kuga doing similar mileage to OP, very nice drive, comfortable but lacking a bit on the mpg front @45mpg.

You’re aware that the Infiniti is a rebadged Mercedes, and not even a proper Mercedes at that?

A Leon FR might be worth a look, seats are surprisingly good for long distance and they have decent headlights, cruise control, climate control and Bluetooth which are the main things you need.

Google search results forgot to mention that Infiniti are not even sold in Ireland.

As always with questions relating to high mileage in comfort, the answer is the largest, best speced Volvo available within budget. In this instance, probably a S60/V60 with the 2.0 engine and SE Lux or R-design trim depending on personal preference
