Licensing Question

Hello all, I recently turned 24 and as such was entitled to a full A motorbike license. I have just started my IBT yesterday and it is clearly apparent that I am not able for the 600cc A cat bike that was provided for me. I am not very tall (about 5’5”) and am skinny. The question I have is could I just go about my A1 or A2 license instead of the full A license? Any help would be great appreciated.

    Thanks

Can you ask for a smaller, lighter bike?

I'd definitely be by trying a different bike before dropping down the licences. Maybe try a few lessons on a smaller bike category to get used to riding and then go back to the A bike. The IBT is only basic training you could need more.

I did my IBT last month and I had the opposite experience to you, I found the 125 van van difficult to ride smoothly but it clicked for me when I got on a 700 MT07. Still made plenty of mistakes! I would suggest, like rock22 has, asking to try a smaller bike and see if you are more comfortable. You can always go back to the bigger bike later when you have mastered the basic skills on the small bike even if that means completing your IBT at A1 or A2 so be it.

There is always the option of doing progressive access IBT at a later date to upgrade from A1 to A2 or A2 to A depending on the level you're at. This also applies for full licences so if you were to pass your test at A2, you could do the progressive access IBT to have that upgraded to an A licence without the need for another test.

The main thing is not to be put off if one particular bike doesn't suit, there's a good chance a change will make all the difference.

I would avoid the A1 - far too limiting.

A2 would be perfectly acceptable and have a wide range of bikes including smaller/lighter/narrower. If you end up doing your test on A2 you won't have to resit your test to go to A in due course. All that will be required at that point is an extra module of training and you'd move to A automatically.

[edit] if none of the A2 are actually smaller etc, they might just be milder to ride, making it easier [/edit]

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

Thanks for the advice guys I really appreciate it. Going to look at going for the A2 and progressing later to the A if I feel like that’s something I want to do!
