On a side note...can a car be 'sold' on that has no logbook? - it is yet to be taxed for the first time.

It's been off the road since registering but forgot to renew the declaration before the end of last month and it's €300+ for the three months minimum. I'd rather avoid this if I could as it's still off the road and will be for a few more months.

Could I just declare it now again and then be faced only with one month back tax? - EDIT - I see this is not an option.

No as you had 21 days to do so.

As it hasn't been taxed and no VLC you are very restricted.

I'd recommend doing it now, get VLC and then declare off the road.

Sure there's no rush for the VLC now as I'll have to pay for three months tax anyway so I'll just need to pay it in the next 90 days.

EDIT: I think I can possibly register a change of ownership at the motor tax office without having the VLC.

There is a form but I believe the car has to have been previously owned in the state and VLC issued.

I rather think the tax will be charged back to the original due date , SORD not withstanding.

Thanks for that colm_mcm...or maybe even use -

I'll enquire at the motor tax office and see what they say.

I can't see why a vehicle has to be either currently declared off the road or else currently taxed to be able to make a new off the road declaration for the vehicle. Surely once it is done in advance of the period of declaration, then that's all that would matter, or am I missing something?
The vehicle in question has no declaration against it for a period of a few days and this is penalised by having to pay three months tax?? Surely one should only be tax liable for the amount of months that there is no declaration in force.

If it's not then we're back to the old system of " drive for as long as you can get away with, then declare it was off the road the whole time"

That was a great system in fairness

Yes you can declare off the road once vrt is paid.

Yes you can declare off the road once vrt is paid.

But can you then sell the vehicle without taxing it using a form or is it necesary to have a log book. I assume new owner would only be liable to pay tax for the date of ownership transfer?.

Wasn't the old system you could make a declaration retrospectively?
Once the declaration is made for some period of time in the future what difference should it make that the car is taxed or off the road at the time of the new declaration?

What about the time up until the new declaration? If they just write it off then its the same as the old system.

The owner is liable to the tax for this period of course - when they go to tax the vehicle the arrears for this period are taken into account.
Sure in the current system they have to write off tax arrears once the vehicle changes owners.
