Alarm sound from boot of Golf

My wife took my car today and said there was an alarm sound from the boot the whole time, including before she got in. It was louder when she listed the back part to see the spare wheel so coming from there somewhere. It's a 2011 diesel golf. Any ideas what this might be?

No it's parked at a train station half an hour away. (Not worth driving out with my one year old just to hear it.)

Might that make an alarm when its battery was low?
It's possible as I wasn't the original owner.

The alarm itself (presuming there is a factory alarm) will make a sound when the internal battery is low, not sure the alarm for a mk6 golf is in the boot though, i may be wrong.

It has a different battery so the low battery light wouldn't show? And it's not charged by driving?

Yeah but not entirely sure of the set up on that golf. Plus i'd be surprised at it dying after only 8 years.

Does the car warn you when the doors or boot isn't closed properly and has she just put something in the boot? It's easy for something to get into the boot latch that makes you think it's shut but it's not secured.

No it was like that as she approached it this morning, but wasn't like that last night.

    Has it a hitch?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,007 ✭✭✭s7ryf3925pivug

It has a tow bar, if that's what a hitch is?

Car is back now. Loud very high pitched constant single tone. From behind the rear driver light as far as I can tell. There is a strange thin cable going from there to the back of the car. Looking behind the fabric there is a box with a number of wires connected to it which is labeled towing interface.

Might be a wiring box for trailer lights (hence the earlier hitch question I suspect?)? Those boxes make a noise when the indicators are in operation when the trailer lights are plugged in. Remotely possible a bulb or bulb cluster with some other issue could cause the unit to buzz when its not supposed to?

Still bit of a long shot but worth bearing in mind.

Start popping fuses to see if you can narrow down what's causing the noise, they'll be labeled in the owner's manual or on the fuse box lid.

Don’t go pulling fuses. If it’s coming from that box it could be a faulty interface. But check the trailer socket first for any obvious damage.

It’s rare enough but them interface relays can fail and make all sorts of strange noises.

If you want to stop the noise there’s 2 wires going into terminals that are labeled + and -. Disconnect the minus but the socket won’t work obviously.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,007 ✭✭✭s7ryf3925pivug

Yeah I think it's the interface. Maybe just a pulled wire - the wire goes diagonally from the side bulkhead to the middle of the back, which seems really poorly done and likely to result in issues.

One way or another I'll just bring it to a garage when I can. See nothing to suggest it's not safe to drive (just very annoying to).

    Thanks for the replies.

The negative wire will just stop it in the meantime anyway. There’s no harm in removing it.

Sounds like the tow bar wiring module has gone tits up.
