Well lads, thinking of buying a crewcab pick up around 04 -07
More than likely a Hilux or l200- any strong opinions on either? Can seem to get a good bit higher spec on the Mitsubishi s. Are the Hilux a bit gutless?

If you get a HiLink get the 2.5L
The 06 L200 is a good machine too

Don't rule out the dmax of that era either. Good solid reliable machine.

Ya I hadn't ruled them out, just seem harder to come by

The l 200 are a pure sow on diesel. The older hilux has a better engine in the 2.5 than the 3 liter. I’d vote hilux all the way.

Having a gear lever rather than button for the 4wd is handy

I find the hilux very good, the 2.5 is very basic but the difference in the price against the 3.0L meant that I went for the 2.5. No one was buying the 2.5 at the time so it was easy bought. A very comfortable jeep,
It's heavy on diesel too but aren't they all

Do ya really need the jeep for towing or offroad? I always had a jeep (im not farming, plant hire here) when kids came along I had to get something with seats and ended up with a transporter crewcab,1.9 engine and I have private tax and insurance on it.Great on diesel compared to the jeep, have to say I'm delighted with it,it's great for loading kids, toys, buggies etc.when I need more room I can take out the back seat in 2 mins and I have a full size van.towing capacity is limited I know and off road is a no no...when I need to tow something I swap with a mate for his jeep but now I hear him on about looking for a van too...Not for everybody I know but it's worth considering...

Curious as to why not the 3.0?

The 2.5 had a better gear ratio
You’d be well down the gears on the 3.0 if pulling
That’s the warning I got when I was looking
Think that’s been sorted on the newer versions

The 3 l blew engines constantly. Tara mines used both and they had a stockpile of 2.5 engines a good while back as it was about all that was left of the hiluxes after they finished with them. Simple bullet proof engines.

The older non intercooled 2.5 2005 onwards is dog slow though.

All I’ve towed with a 3.0 Hilux was a car on a transporter

I’d have a DMAX over one

Dodgey oil pumps can seize the whole engine. I'd avoid anything with that era 2.2 ford engine.
