Retail Workers- are you told to give customers manky ten/twenty euro notes?

So I was getting a few things in the local Spar after work yesterday and my change came to 12 euros, I got this miserable excuse of a ten euro note, which was half ripped and looked ready to dissolve. So I said to the girl "Sorry that's too damaged, can I get a better one?" and with barely disguised disdain, she shoved her hand in the till and threw a better one at me.

What gives?? Im asking retail workers here- are you told by your bosses to try and chance your arm when giving change to someone you think might be a pushover and wont answer back? Or do you just do this off your own back? Genuinely curious here as I have seen it happen a lot with ripped and torn notes..

People give out the top note in the till end of story. If it's really in **** most would just bank it, easier to give to the bank than a picky customer too.

Christ. No. From my retail days, I remember there was minimal thought put into what notes I gave in change. If there were plenty of notes, I’d probably go instinctively go for the ones in good condition but sometimes there aren’t lots of notes to choose from and sometimes if you’re really busy, you just grab the nearest one.

Who cares if the note is a bit damaged anyway? It’s still legal tender.

This thread reminds me how head-wrecking the general public was to deal with though.

I used to just grab whatever. We're only giving you back the notes customers give to us.

Notes you hand me-back of the section, notes I hand you-front of the section, the only time I even look at the note is to make sure it's the right amount.

    What's a note?
Does it support apple pay ?

Hate handling either coins or notes, they're all filthy even if they're in good condition. I had a variety of retail jobs as a student, I never put any thought into the condition of the notes. It was just whatever was on top or was handiest.

Oh yeah, I was only messing! I used to work in a Dunnes when I was a youngfella and had many very nice experiences with customers. There were some ****wits too but there always will be.

Old crumple notes have a higher chance to have cocaine.

I only ever use cash, hence the reason im getting an audit from the revenue for undeclared income i suppose, do the revenue take cash as payment i wonder

When I worked in retail in college I didn't really think about it too much. I just gave out whatever note came to my fingertips first. I think banks return old and battered notes to the central bank for destruction.

I noticed this a lot when I came to Spain, convinced the lousy c.unts working at the tills were told to give manky notes and 1c,2c,5c coins as much as possible.

Don't notice it now cos I use my card for 99.99% of purchases.

People just hand out the first note. That's it.

You sound like a painful customer to deal with.

I'll try not give out notes that are in poor condition unless the customer is a kunt, then they get the tatty notes and when they ask to change them..."oh can't open the till without a cash sale"

There's absolutely no need to do that. A business (or any person) can just request a replacement note from the central bank. Lots of businesses and charities do that fairly routinely.

In theory, the banks shouldn't reject those notes for that reason, but lodgmenets are often automated now and reject damaged notes

OP is right to object to torn dirty notes.
It's just lazy of the shop to pass them out customers.
They should withdraw them from use and lodge to the bank.

I remember getting a couple of 20s from an ATM before that had dye on them! Now, that was annoying. I’d prefer not to look like a thief.
