Out of that lot the Focus. What's your needs, wants and requirements.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

    Not the Jetta anyway.

    Or the Laguna or 406.

Jesus you have some taste in cars. The Focus is probably the least risky of them, but they’re dog slow and so dull.

Out of those it would be the Jetta or focus for me, tax reasonable, but like the look of the Jetta think i would look at that first.

Everything is petrol but the avensi....???

Any reason behind so much different types, styles and petrol/diesel.

The 1.6 petrol is a dog.

Looking for reliability, low costs, and NCT into next year.

Agreed its not very exciting but neither is my budget at the moment. As i said im open to suggestions. Thanks.

I'd recommend something like this with the proviso that it comes with a new NCT. If it does then great

The 407 for me  But I am a sucker for high tax cars.

They actually have a bit of life behind the wheel and drive quite well, the looks are better than the cookie cutter drab of the Jetta / Focus / Avensis.

My head says the Focus is a safer bet and true banagernomics but I feel there are some better options out there.

From a 5 minute check here is my pick with your budget, its a bit quirky but at least its not Toyota recommendation (or Skoda) :-) . Has a bit of warranty and a decent enough NCT.... A saab 9-3

Mmm ecotec non turbo. It’s on sale 5 days, probably due another cambelt so!

    That Saab looks shagged.

For what its worth, the Focus in the OP's original list is 1.6 litre and not 1.4 litre as claimed by the seller. They never offered the Ghia trim here in the Mk2 with a 1.4 litre engine.

Good point. i was mildly suspicious when the reg number was not fully shown.

The 1.6 makes it more appealing in my view. I’m suspicious of the timing belt/water pump done last week and hidden reg though.

I NEVER buy anything that they've hidden the reg. What's to hide?

Usually so it can't be cloned but sometimes for other dubious reasons...

This is the mentality of it.

Yep, cheapest to run and maintain.
The luguna is second gen I think so dreadful reputation.
Imagine paying over 900 bills a year to tax that peugeot?! It would break your heart.

We have one, boring but comfortable enough and does the job. As reliable as you'll get for the money. Make sure its been looked after, ours need 300 quid worth of work recently as previous owner had kept it visually immaculate but mechanically less so.

What do people feel is the issue(s) with the Jetta? Just curious as I've wondered what they're like myself

The engine. Nothing wrong with a diesel Jetta though.

Tax is 636 on it. Ad is wrong.

It’s got a heap of owners on the book which to me is always a sign that it hasn’t been maintained.
Last change of ownership a month ago.

Also, while the 1.6 8 valve engine is smooth and quiet, it’s quite slow and not especially reliable. I’ll eat my hat if it actually has a full service history.

It does look tidy in the pictures to be fair.

I know. My point is the petrol engine in that one is rubbish, a diesel Jetta would be fine.

A few 1.7l petrol from 2008 taxed on emissions seems to be 750.

Well yeah, they would be if their emissions were a certain figure,

That car was registered early in 2008, so is on cc tax, which is cheaper in this case.

What is the issue with the Laguna? I know they had issues with window regulators, anything else?

Electrics, suspension, dephayser pulleys on the engine and general build quality. They're just too much of a risk as them is end of the budget.

If ya don't mind the tax this could be a left of field option.

Others to consider would be a petrol accord, civic, corolla or Avensis.

Get something with a reasonably long test and bring a trusted person/mechanic to give any prospective purchase the once over.

Fair enough, I sorta like the shape of them but as you suggest too much of risk..

Did the post 2006 models improve? A fair few diesels around of the 08 onwards vintage.

Yes but it's very hard to recommend any Laguna 2. A Laguna 3 is a different story and very well built.
