Hi All, W eare about to remove massive overgrown trees from our back garden but will need to then install a wall or a fence as there is only a small 2 or 3 ft high wall between the neighbours and us on either side. The garden is 26metres long so what is the best option? Build the wall up or install a new fence?

Is there neighbor going to split the cost with you, personally I would build a wall but a fence will be cheaper

If the proper foundations are in for a higher wall, go with that, if they are not sufficient, a fence on top of existing wall may be the way foreword.

A good looking wall is maybe 20-40x as expensive as a good looking fence.

Did this earlier this year.Similar length too.

Went with a block wall.4" on the edge.2 meters high.

Considered a gravel board fence too but was too dear even with fitting myself.
Had to get a block layer to lay the blocks after I done the foundations.
    600mm x 300mm base.

Check your existing foundations to see will they support a higher wall.

    I didn't even consider a wooden fence.

The biggest job was cutting/disposing of trees bushes and roots beforehand.A bloody dose.

Thanks for your responses. @stratowide do you mind me asking what kind of price range your wall cost you. O agree.. the trees etc are a big job. have had a couple of quotes in at €2.5k to remove them. If only i could whittle them into a nice fence ;-)

    35m long 2m high.
    Approximate prices.Cant remember exact figures.

    Blocks €650
    Block layer €950 (mates rates).
    Sand cement €120
    Caps €250
Blocks pointed too.wont be plastering it.

I supplied my labour, mixer, plas and did all the fetching myself.
This is only the wall not foundations.

I'd be afraid to ask what a builder would charge.

Worth every cent as the privacy is priceless.

Talk to them before you do anything with the boundary. No better way of making an enemy than to mess with a boundary without even talking to them.
