Mounting a TV on to MDF - any ideas?

Wonder has anyone any ideas on this one.

My daughter got wall to wall shelving and units built in to her living room. There is roughly a 30mm gap between the backboard and a concrete wall (for cable management). In filling this gap so she can hang the TV, the carpenter put a length of 2x4 to either side of where she will hang the tv.

However, the two lengths are 900mil apart, and the largest wall plate we could find was 700mm meaning we can't hit the stud work and anchor the plate to the wall.

She doesn't want to cut into the new unit of course.

The mdf is about 25mil thick, but it's mdf.

Any ideas on how to get this tv on the wall?

A piece of 900mm 3/4” ply screwed into the studs and mount the plate on that

Long screws through the MDF to the wall.

    The TV is about 25kgs.

She just got the unit painted. I'll get on to the carpenter this morning but the man is paid and if he ballsed it up he's not going to come back I'd say nor would I trust him.

    Thanks for the replies lads.

Can I get bolts that length? What about the fact there is a 30mil gap between the mdf and the concrete wall? That's 30mil of anchored to nothing.

You can get any length of screws. I've my TV and curtains done with long screws though the dry wall. The plaster will provide a bit of support but you'd need to be hanging out of something which has several screws into a concrete wall for it to fall.

I'd want to be able to do a couple of chin ups off the bracket before I'd hang an expensive TV on it.

These studs are 900m apart. I'm looking to see can I get a wall plate wide enough but most I've seen are 700m. I could go through the MDF as you said but I'm just concerned there is a 30mm gap of thin air behind it.

Don’t be. 30mm is nothing. Out of interest, how old is the TV? 25 kgs must be an old CRT unit? Surely not a flat screen.

You’re sorted so. That TV is a shade under 1500mm wide so just put a backing board spanning the 900mm studs (a sheet of 4” x 2” x 18mm MDF / PLY would work fine as the TV height is way over 600mm) and then fit your bracket to that.

On another note, best give that TV to me. It’ll be wasted in a bedroom ;)

My problem is there is a 60mm (remeasured it) gap between the MDF and the concrete wall. I can drive a fixing through the ply but I'll hit the MDF and the 60mm gap and fear it won't hold it.

Albeit if I put 4 fixings at top and bottom of the bracket, maybe that would spread the load?

Alternatively if there is a bracket out there with an extended wall plate it would be handy! Need 900mm wall plate.

    This.
Look for “frame fixers” and they will be strong and long enough to do your job.

What’s the 900mm wall plate going to give you that a 900 mm wide sheet fitted to the studs won’t?

This is exactly what you do. Paint the board same colour as the wall so it blends in with it even though it won't be seen.

God no, concrete screws are what you want, available in various lengths from local hardware store. Best new fixing improvement in years
Here they are on Screwfix for reference.

So you are saying straight through the 30mm MDF and into the concrete wall despite their being a hollow gap between the board and the concrete wall?

If it works it works, but I'm leaning towards simply screwing a length of plywood at the weekend and then bolting the bracket on to it rather than screws. I hope to f*ck it holds!

as long as you use screws or frame fixers long enough so that the penetrate enough of the concrete (details will be on the screw pack) then you have no issues.
The MDF isnt really doing anything other than helping the screw not bend, which it wouldnt really anyway.

Bolting? You are over complicating this. It’s 25kg, not 25 tonne. Screws to ply will more than suffice.

You could hang a car from it using screws.

I’d screw into the concrete. Dint worry about the gap. It’s the same gap that your kitchen cupboards are hanging off.
