A friend is learning to drive in Dublin and needs regular practise but does not have a car. Any cost effective suggestions? Maybe a retired person who would allow their car to be used and accompany the person for an hourly fee? Insurance would need to be sorted as well of course.

Tbh the only way I see this working is asking a relative. No pensioner is going to go around in a car with a stranger. Cheapest option would be to block book driving lessons.

Just keep taking lessons in the instructors car until he passes his test, far the easiest way.

Let’s just say, for talking sake, it’s €1600 to be added onto said pensioners insurance. That’s the equivalent of FORTY lessons at €40.

Why do people in this country try to cut corners in relation to learning to drive. Go to a professional, do it properly and live happily ever after

Who said they were cutting corners? The person wants to practice what they have learnt!
One has to have official lessons, then you practice. That's why you see a lot of cars in the road with L plates....there obviously using that car for practice or someone is.
Don't know why so hard to understand.

Read the op. Practice with someone, which they want to pay and whose car they’ll need to be insured on (which they’ll need to pay for). It doesn’t make sense. There’s nothing like professional help.
Practice can be very helpful but the wording of the op makes it sound like it’s trying to be done on the cheap. I’m highlighting the potential costs and likelihood that the help might not be update or beneficial.

Every car with L plates is a provisional licence driver, not someone practicing.
As a matter of interest, how much would you charge to let someone drive your car for an hour with you in it?
A driving lesson is about 35 euro an hour including insurance and fuel and the instructors time, can't see it being done anywhere close to that cost any other way.
Add in risk etc of letting a learner drive car

Add in the fact that, legally, the only people who can assist learners “for hire or reward” are qualified driving instructors who’ve passed 3 exams to earn that right.

If you're not a qualified ADI, you cannot take money from someone for driving lessons. An 'hourly fee' is different from giving your sponsor a few quid to cover petrol, or a box of milk tray to say thanks!

I hope they get sorted, but your friend needs to be careful- the arrangement you suggest could get both them, and the person who agrees to help them, in trouble.
