I'd actually forgotten this one, amidst all the mental excitement of the past week .....

Now, forgive me; I know about as much about bats as I do about your living room furniture. I know I could google my question ~ but, where's the fun in that?

So, I was talking to my mate, Hugh, down in town, the other day. He tells me how his wife got up, in the middle of the night, and her activity disturbed a bat. Said bat, Hugh reckons, having had to have come in previously and hid there - due to the logistics of windows and doors having been opened.

Nothing worth posting about there so. Bats get into homes. It happens. But, here's the thing:

Hugh's as level headed and sober a guy as I know. Born and bred in the one street town, by the little river. He has his farm too. He's perfectly used to bats.

But, he reckons he's woke up to see what he described as a " Dracula Bat " flapping around above his head! He Really made it plane that this bugger was Huge!

And that's when a snippet from my childhood came back to me. (Yeah; I must have read it on the cave wall! ;)) Is not Daubenton's Water Bat the big one?

    Natterer's, Leisler's and Brown Long-eared are bigger than Daubenton's.

Ahh, right! Thanks. Never even Heard of them! :o

Any wild stab at which it might have been, please? I mean; Assuming they'd better fit the bill of a Bela Lugosi effort? Just so I can run it past Hugh, as a better informed guess than mine. Obviously, we'll never know now.

Natterer's is the more common of the three in Leitrim and can often be found in towns.
