January trip - Central / South America?

Hi all. I'm travelling to the states in January with work and will add on a 7-10 day holiday at the end before coming back across the pond. Looking for recommendations for somewhere warm, safe, good value for money and fun at that time of year.

I did something similiar last year and went Vegas - Tulum, Mexico. Great weather, very safe and very affordable.

Open to suggestions but early runners include Barbados, Dominican Republic and maybe back to Mexico. Will be flying out of Chicago, direct flights would be great and will need to travel back through the states on the way home.

    Any other suggestions / advice?

None of those places are central or South America!

Resort wise Dom Rep and Barbados are polar opposites. The former has lots of huge resorts with attendant range of services and facilities. Even those which advertise as small or boutique are generally part of larger complexes. Dom Rep is now mostly Punta Cana end and few people bother going to Santo Doningo (first city in New World) making it a clean, relatively safe holiday which could be in a Floridacresort. Barbados hotels and resorts tend to be much smaller and there tends to be more interaction with locals, whether at Oistins, while walking around Bridgetown etc. Each has their own benefits.
