Jacques Chirac — former president and prime minister of France and mayor of Paris — has died, aged 86. He was the first to formally acknowledge how France deported Jews to Nazi death camps during the second world war.

If I'm not mistaken he alone opposed the WMD war in Iraq.

The last successful President of France, famous for opposing the US led invasion of Iraq but also for continuing French Nuclear testing in the Pacific. A mixed legacy.

He was involved in the greatest ever case of pot-kettle in the history of the world when Bono called him a wanker.
