Looking at a car with a good service history, been serviced recently. Is a mechanic look over before purchase still essential?

Service history is only ink on a page, not proof of anything.

depends on your location make model, if its luxury car id say its well worth spending 100e, or even ask to bring it to decent garage to get it inspected, as paper trail can be hit and miss, many will use independent garages to cover up, fix issues and that wont go on record.

as buying 2k-5k car isnt massive lose, but drop 10-20k and then few months later find out smth is on the way out and your looking at few grand is massive hit on pocket.

as likes of nct test cover more so basic checks - if theres any issues with engine, electronics that could turn to money pit.
