A quick look on YouTube at some old videos shows they had them at the 1987 WC, so some time before that.

I recently watched a test match from 1976 on YouTube out of curiosity.

    No padding then.

So somewhere between 1976 and 1987.

They had them in 1982 as well when Ireland beat England at Twickenham.

They didn't have them in Thomond Park in 1978 anyway. Munster beat the All Blacks then, if you didn't know.

The pads are there. They’re skimpy, skinny things, but that was what pads were like at the time. I know, because I started playing in ‘79.

Could be much longer ago than that. I chose random 5N games on YouTube. Even in 1971 there was some form of padding, but much thinner. Also found a game from 1966 with none but with wooden posts, so 1970ish and metal posts?

They didn't have them at the end of the 40s anyway

    Nor the 60s

    So early 70s I'd suggest

Your right actually. The 1976 game had thin pads at the base of the posts not large pads I'm used to today. I originally though the base of posts were just painted a little.
