New Door lock and handle

The door handle on my front entrance door is not working properly. In order to lock the door you have to lift the handle up and it has started to become stubborn to lock. I think its had its time and needs to be replaced. I rang a locksmith today and he said it looks like not on the door handle and lock that will need to be replaced but also a metal strip that runs down underneath the lock. He said it would cost €180 for the whole job to include the supply of 3 keys. Is this the average price for a new lock and handle? I wasn't sure where to post this so please move it to a different forum if its in the wrong one. I wasn't sure if I should post it in the security appliances forum

I'd buy a can of spray lubricant and blast anything that looks like it moves, have plenty of rags to catch run off. Had to do this to my door before. If that doesn't work then get 2 other quotes.

Open the door. Then lock the door in the open position by lifting handle and turning key. If door behaves the same way as when you lock door when engaged with reciever on frame it's more that n likely the lock. If locking mechanism is fine, you're problem is door has dropped and so reciever is not lined up correctly. This can by corrected by adjusting the hinges...

Billy; Have ye checked the channel the bottom of the door sits on?

Only, that sounds just like my doors. Lift the handle to turn the key? And I've found the tiniest speck of road grit, getting into that bottom dual channel, can cause absolute havoc with the door.

What I do is run my finger tip along the grooves at the bottom and see if I rake anything out.

    Worth a go .....
