    Hi All

My son has just turned 8 and is in 2nd class. He has been diagnosed with severe dyslexia and he meets the criteria for access to a reading school / unit. I know nothing about these schools and would greatly appreciate any advice. My queries are as follows:

1 are reading schools any better than a reading unit within a primary school.

2 who approves/ rejects the child's application? The principal of the reading school / unit? SENO? Or both? Someone else?

3 can you choose where you apply?. My son's current primary school has a reading unit but I don't know if it's the best option for him, may be he should attend a specialist reading school, advice welcome please?

4 my son has adhd and finds it difficult to concentrate. Could this prevent him from getting approved for a place in a reading school / unit?

Thanks for reading. All advice welcome.

If there’s a reading unit in his own school, that would be better for him at this age , I think . As to criteria, I’d talk to the SEN team or principal as to whether or not he would qualify for it as a first port of call .
ADHD would not be a barrier to accessing a reading unit / school .
