I've watched the proms (especially the last night) for as long as I can remember. My dad is an opera fanatic so I suppose I had no choice really.
Is it wrong for me as an Irish woman to watch and enjoy such British pomp?

Enjoy it. Be confident in your own identity, it’s no threat.

I used to want to plant bombs
At the last night of the Proms
But, now you'll find me with the baby in the bathroom
With that big shell listening for the sound of the sea

I'll even admit to knowing the words and singing along with the last few songs. Never God Save the Queen though.

I know a few words of that:

    God save the queen
    Her fascist regime
    A major moron
    A potential h-bomb

    Great tune.

Some of the pieces are good in fairness. I look at it the same way as a lot of music from a few hundred years ago, or artistic works by Michaelangelo, da Vinci, etc. Sponsored by the church, who are *****, but nevertheless great art. You can enjoy it for what it is ... and ignore the context to an extent.

But the obvious answer is ... you enjoy what you want, **** the rest.

Older brother was a Sex Pistols fanatic and got me into them.

I watch it, I've given material and more support to the IRA in the 80s and 90s.

Sure let them enjoy the occasion, it's their's.

Nothing wrong with being who you are. I don't want to stop them being them, long as they let others be.

There's nothing wrong with praising England's green and pleasant land.

Just the pomp or did you enjoy the circumstance too?

There used to be a fella who brought a big Irish tricolour to it - is he still doing it?

I just realised how republican I must be when I don't know what proms are.

I had no idea about it till flicking through the channels, I came upon it.
Watched it for all of 10 seconds

There’s a bit of a ‘bang’ of nostalgia for Great Britain and the empire off it, but the music itself is extremely enjoyable for anyone who isn’t a complete philistine.

Neil Horan? No idea what happened to him after Britain's Got Talent...

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

From the news it seemed as though it got tediously political?

    Shame that.

Not at all. I am I am Irish born and bread but have watched many a British show, film and station as I am sure most of us have. That does not make me any less Irish just open minded.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

I always thought Pomp and Circumstance was a great tune, regardless of the lyrics.

No I don't think it was that mad bastard. I'll do a bit of googling and see what comes back.

Edit 1: Old boards.ie thread here about it.
