When to register as self-employed?

    Hey folks,
There is a lot of information out there and while I've read a lot of stuff and I'm still unclear what to do. Please forgive me asking the same questions.

I lost my job a good while back.
I'm still looking for a job, but this seems to be taking a while.
In the meantime I've picked up some freelancing work with a business I know.
So far this is limited to one project of theirs and could pay around €640 a month. Maybe a bit more, maybe much less.
I'm planning on putting away 20% income tax and 4% PRSI from the income.

The minute I get an job offer I drop them like it's hot (they know) and start working employed again.

Considering this might not last longer than a few months, do I register as self-employed now or is there a income threshold or similar? I understand some people work as freelancers and register as self-employed once they made more than €3000 or €5000 but I don't understand why.

Thanks in advance for all helpful replies.

I would just work away and contact no one n pull the plug when u find a job.
Its trivial money yer getting. Lot of hassle contacing revenue, forms, accountant etc for something short term.
