So I got my car fixed yesterday and paid hourly labour charge of 120 + vat to fix an engine light issue.
Engine light came back today and I am told they would have to redo diagnostic test and I will be charged again.

    Is it normal?

Did they give you any option as to Wether you wanted the light just turned off or a repair done?
Or this might work, we can try this first?

I think I'd sarcastically ask is this a daily fee and can you book it In for tomorrow and the next day too...

What they told me is "no part change required, you're good to go" paid hourly labour rate.

120+VAT Are you driving something extra special like a Lambi, McLaren or Bugatti?

What fault code did it read? How were they sure it was fixed?

Define fixed in the first visit. What was problem and what did you tell them to do?

If they're gonna charge you again it sounds like you should be asking for a refund on the first visit if they did nothing?

There's not really enough information here to make a good judgement call. My gut though is the garage should take a look a look at the car before making a judgement call on charging a second time.

So its a yellow engine light associated with Adblue error. I topped up adblue myself but still engine light and adblue "see adblue user manual" persisted every time I started the car. So I took it to the dealer. They did diagnostic and told me no part change was required and I paid 120 + vat. Errors were gone.

Next morning the exact same issue popped up.
They did diagnostic again and saying a sensor needs to be replaced. They are contacting main Merc office for a goodwill warranty as sensor is expensive (I don't know the cost yet).
So now, if this sensor is covered by Merc goodwill then I need to pay only the labour.
If this part is not covered by Merc, then I pay for sensor + labour from my pocket.

Where do you think I stand in this situation?

Taking everything on face value, a good garage would take that labour of the next jobs labour. But considering they charged 120 for plugging in a computer and resetting it, they may not be a good garage.

If they’re who I assume they are, they are to be avoided.

Yep, if they are the main dealer for the brand in the midwest then their reputation for poor service is well known.
