Close call - J13 M50 roundabout

Might not be in the right forum and I am sure this must have been discussed before but I can’t find it so please move if necessary.

My daily drive home involves driving down the slip road towards junction 13 heading northbound on the m50. There is a roundabout that is just prior to either heading onto the m50 or turning right to Dundrum, the roundabout is split into 2 lanes. The right lane is used by people to both turn right (heading to Dundrum) or to continue on straight onto the m50. Lately it has gotten far worse with the number of people who turn right from the left lane i.e. cutting people off who may be going straight onto the m50 from the right lane. I am amazed I have yet to see a crash happen here as it’s only getting worse.

Now the reason I am posting, yesterday evening I had a very close call on this roundabout and the situation is even worse than as described above. I was in fact coming from Dundrum heading onto the m50 so I was entering the roundabout in the right lane to turn right, as I entered the roundabout another car who was coming from the slip road in the left lane joined the roundabout the same time as I was coming around it, this person was indicating to turn right i.e. cutting across me.

Luckily a split second before a crash happened I noticed the indicator and slammed on the breaks to avoid a collision as did the other car. The other car got extremely irate thinking they were correct and drove off.

Is anyone else noticing this as I feel it’s just an accident waiting to happen?

Unfortunately like all bad habits they seem to be on the rise alright, I see it all the time at that roundabout.

As bad as it sounds, all you can do is have a dashcam and have the evidence when you need it.

I know exactly what you're talking about and have witnessed it plenty of times there, and in all honesty if I had to be the car that any dummy turned in on top of then I'd gladly let them take the front of my car off and have them deal with their own stupidity and consequences.

Was this person on your left hand side?

    Ya.

Essentially the person was in the outside lane turning right.

Sounds a dodgy setup alright. The roundabout at templeogue is a balls too if your going right to head north on the m50.

There’s nothing dodgy about the setup. It’s just ***** who think they’re too special to queue to use the correct lane like everyone else.

What it's down to as well is mixed messages from the manual/ads.

"If taking exit 1 or 2, use the left lane" vs "if going further than 12 o'clock use the right lane"

Per the above, BOTH statements could seem to be true, as there's no 9 o'clock exit.. but the reality is that all right-turning traffic (towards Dundrum) should be in the right/inner lane

I feel your pain, that roundabout is also a part of my daily commute, and I see that a lot too.

If I'm reading it correctly.. You were driving up through Ballinteer onto the roundabout to bring you on the m50 northbound and a car came from your left being the slip road from Sandyford.. Then the other driver should have yield to you, the junction isn't the problem just an idiot that didn't give right of way

I've yet to have a crash there but have had 2 either side of sandyford exit on the roundabout above the M50.

I see this all the time op and I do feel like going straight just to take the priicks out.

    Correct.

From the other persons perspective they saw I was in the inside lane so joined the roundabout in the left lane as it was empty.
So from their point of view I was just on the roundabout to do a full circle back the way I came which just baffles me how someone would think that.

I am always wary on this roundabout but the reaction from the other driver is what p*ssed me off most of all.

Doesn't matter what they think, the reason they do this is to jump ahead of those 100s of others that drive correctly....

I have them do it when driving a bus and it's not just that roundabout.

Another bad one is at the roundabout after Tesco dundrum before the smaller one at ballinteer.

I go around to 3 o'clock on roundabout and end up with others doing exactly the same in the left lane.... Such priicks and some even try to cause a crash but they all know damn well what they're doing.

All of the above roundabouts are a nightmare almost all the time. I regularly have to negotiate them, and it is a nerve wracking experience. Excessive traffic volume, poor design , etc, they are just not up to it. On top of that you have ignorant aggressive impatient dickheads driving as if they are the only ones that matter, and the result is as has been described.
