Changing ownership to avoid back tax

Is it possible to only change the ownership once to avoid paying back tax on a vehicle?
The normal advice given is to change it into a different family member/neighbour/friends/etc name and then change it back. This is a tad time consuming and puts up 2 extra owners on the book.
I was wondering if I send it away but added my middle name to my name on the book and added an extra line of address that would that be sufficient. This would be quicker and only add one extra owner on the book

    Many thanks.

    No

In fact, yes. You could also change your name to the Irish version

The ownership of the vehicle hasn't changed. Just your name.

There's nothing to stop you saying your 'Father with the same name as you' bought the car from you, so yes it's possible.

The government will eventually wake up to this 'trick' as well, similar to the change they brought in in 2013. You'll need your PSC card next to register a change of ownership that includes your PPS number no doubt. vehicles being in the names of children isn't unheard of either. I've ever avoided back tax by changing the ownership since the law changed but was a regular for declaring it off the road before changes came in.

You're left with 2 choices OP, suck it up and pay, or change the ownership, no need to change it back again unless you end up in the same scenario as you currently find yourself.

This would still require a change of ownership which would result in Snr/Jnr at the end of the name.

I take it you didn't do it 4 months ago when ya first asked? Has the car been off the road or what's the craic?

Just note, you may have difficulty insuring a car you don't own

It hasn't changed owners.... That's just name change or address change.

Sorry OP, I'll have to close this.
Posts that encourage drivers to break the law e.g. telling people to make false motor tax declarations may result in either an infraction or a banning.
