Employment Terminated

After 4 years I have been let go by my employer.

The performance in my department has declined this year. I was given a final warning, then told my performance had improved, then told I was being let go.

I would have thought that an employee would be given more time to improve, or some form of means to reply or challenge, rather than just being let go. I was never given any help, just told to do better.

I'm wondering, is it worth contesting with the company. Or further.

I do wonder will it hamper getting a reference, or if I was to take it to a tribunal, would that hamper future job prospects?
