    Hello,

I'm looking at some ex rental cars on Cargiant, specifically a Hyundai Tucson. Some questions.

    - Should i be weary of ex rental cars ?
    - Considering the low mileage on these cars, is there much risk attached with these cars ?

There is always a risk. All it takes is one bad driver to rag a car in a very short space of time especially a car they don't own so given the high number of different drivers a rental car usually has, expect the chances of it having a harder life than a privately owned car of the same age to be much higher. There is an old saying, "the fastest car in the world is a rental car." Make what you want of that.

The other side would be that you have nervous tourists, sometimes driving on the wrong side of the road so are extra cautious? I guess you’re either a glass half full or empty person!

i own an ex rental. It owned by a Limerick based Dublin registered company. I have had gearbox issues, but that aside it has been hassle free in 3 years of driving. Mileage was average, interior was well looked after. Just the damn gearbox. an automatic powershift gearbox at that. It's a Volvo XC60

You could also get Americans or Canadians, etc who never drove a manual before. It's a lottery, you pay your money and take your chances.

Never heard of CarGiant before. Definitely seem to have some decent value in there.

I presume Brexit will have a detrimental effect of easy importing from the UK, so anyone interested in doing so should be doing so before the end of January? (albeit, not too early.. wanna get that cheap sterling just before Brexit occurs! :P ).

As an aside, I think a lot of clueless people drive rentals. However, I also think a lot of people are afraid of acting the bollocks in a rental for fear of getting nailed with extra fees and the likes. I had a rental Tucson late last year when my car was wrote off. It had about 30,000km on the clock and it drove like new. Did have the (almost expected  ) paint scrapes and rubs on the corners of the bumpers, though, which was annoying on a car that was less than a year old.

Isn't there some recall on gear box or clutch part....

Car supermarkets like CarGiant are big business in the UK. Their business model is you literally pay the sticker price plus whatever after sales services they can upsell to you, there is no negotiation just like you don't negotiate on a litre of milk or slice pan with Tesco.

I went to CarGaint with two friends who bought bought cars on the same day.

I was driving and they weren't. Had a heated discussion with the salesman for 5 minutes, as he said he needed MY keys in order to let us look at a car.

Specifically told us not to drive the Mondeo they brought around the front for us to look at. Clutch bearing was in tatters, and when we told them that, they said we must have damaged it.

Called the manager over and explained the issue to. He said "sure why do you think it's £1000 cheaper than the car beside it" while laughing.

In the end the guys left with a 308 Estate and 520d for good value, which I believe are still running well.

Their MO is buy the cars at auction, valet and add their margain. You have so little chance to drive the car auctions is almost a better option since the auction cars all come with a basic mechanical report.

Apparently they have an infamous buyer at the BCA Blackbushe auction who gets paid £100 for each car he buys. None of the other regulars bother to bid against him.

Very difficult to compete with in terms of value and selection however. No negotiation really allowed. Bring a ton of ID, money laundering laws made it a nightmare to buy on Irish credit cards. We were there for hours to get it validated.

Hyundai clutch is dodgy enough before being abused by rental drivers.
