TV was on in the pub the other night but sound was turned down. Sinead O'Connor was on and was dressed like she is a muslim? Last time I saw her on TV she was dressed like a priest, full black suit white dog collar crucifix. What's the story?

Yeah she's Muslim now. If that keeps her sane then best of luck to her. Whatever works.

We'll never find out for sure but i'd hazard a guess that Sinead suffered extreme trauma as kid.

Yeah she's Muslim now. If that keeps her sane then best of luck to her. Whatever works.

We'll never find out for sure but i'd hazard a guess that Sinead suffered extreme trauma as kid.
    She's confirmed it before:
Sinead O’Connor has claimed that she suffered abuse at the hands of her late mother. According to the singer, her mother would beat her with sweeping brushes, hockey sticks and even poured hot water over her skin.

The Irish Daily Star is reporting that controversial singer O’Connor said that the abuse by her mother Marie, who was killed in a car accident, eventually forced her into running away from home when she was just 13 years old.
    This then continues with:
O’Connor (51) told the Irish Sun how she was just 14-years-old when she was sent to the Sisters of Our Lady of Charity laundry, in Dublin, after she was labeled a "problem child." This particular Magdalene Laundry only shut its doors in 1996.

She told the paper: “We were girls in there, not women, just children really. And the girls in there cried every day.

“It was a prison. We didn’t see our families, we were locked in, cut off from life, deprived of a normal childhood.

“We were told we were there because we were bad people. Some of the girls had been raped at home and not believed.

“One girl was in because she had a bad hip and her family didn’t know what to do with her. It was a great grief to us.”

The rock star explained how her 18 months in High Park in the Drumcondra suburb of Dublin left her so angry at the injustice that it was part of the reason she caused worldwide controversy by tearing up a picture of the Pope on live television.

She added: “It wasn’t the only reason, but it was one of them.”

Sinead, who has previously claimed she suffered abuse as a child, was sent to the Sisters of Our Lady of Charity Institute after she began stealing as a teenager.

“There was no rehabilitation there and no therapy. Nothing but people telling us we were terrible people. I stopped the stealing all right. I didn’t want to be sent back there. But at what cost?

“I wouldn’t class myself as being abused while I was there. I came in at the tail end of it.

“But certainly some of the punishments were a little f***ing odd.

“As a punishment, I would be sent up to bed early to go to sleep with the dying old Magdalene ladies. There would be about six of them in the room and me and I was terrified. These women were old and dying and I was scared up there.
So yea; pretty much guaranteed mental issues from her youth and hopefully the Koran's structured way of thinking and acting can give her some mental peace and comfort.

I didn't realise she was in a Magdalene laundry, I always thought she came from a fairly privileged background.

She did. But she had family problems and was put into a Training Centre co-located with a Magdalene Laundry in Drumcondra for 15 months.

The she was sent to (fee paying) Newtown School in Waterford.

Seems odd that she would join a religion that expects women to cover themselves up in case the menfolk get aroused!

Trust me, I was “not aroused”, as Queen Victoria might have said (but didn’t!) about her appearance on the LLS

I think when women reach a certain age( in other words when the body loses a bit of shape) they can throw off the covers so the holy men don't have to contain themselves! Despicable really when you think about it.

Isn't that the whole thinking behind it though?

By the people who invited the idea it was used as a way by certain priests to try to curtail women's freedom and nothing to do with religion except as a tool. If you want the actual Koran definition (since the Koran is the complete definition according to God) you'd find no such information. There is a long but detailed article here outlining exactly what the Koran states. That priests have then added on their own definitions afterwards (and people following them instead of what the Koran states) is their own folly; in the same way all religions have extremist offspring interpretation the words differently and claiming the rest are various levels of heretics for not following their extreme view.

The story is the poor girl has never been quite right in the head. Way back before ripping up a photo of the pope she was on the Late Late Show. Gay Byrne had to almost protect her during her interview. She made silly comments on the IRA among other things. I wouldn't take her too seriously nor would I make fun of her flipping religion every other day. She is fragile mentally & I don't mean that in a nasty way. I think she has had a long friendship with depression.

She does have a cracking voice though. I listen to her music when it's on & ignore all the nonsense that surrounds her

In Islam is singing allowed. Considering the subject matter of nothing compares to you ??

Cat Stevens converted to Islam and didn't sing for 25 or 30 years. He thought it was against Islam I think. His son came in one day playing a guitar and his outlook changed. He's been singing and performing again for 10 years now.

I'm not sure if the not singing thing is cast in stone. I think it's one interpretation. These are my assumptions. I know very little about Muslims and Islam

I clicked into that article for the complete definition. That's 10 minutes i'll never get back. Just another crowd telling you to do this, or else...

She had a cracking voice, but judging by her performance the other night she hasn't cared for it.

She's some woman to crank up the publicity . She's now saying that Prince attacked her once and tried to beat her up. It's strange she mentions that now when Prince has popped his clogs.

I remember her saying that at least thirty years ago. Not sure if it was ever verified or if he made any comment at the time.

She also said Arsineo Hall gave Prince the drugs that killed him and she had to retract it.
