Sounds like it might not be a good idea. RHD are banned there.

I'm moving to Chisinau in October from the UK and am keen to take my car with me so I have some form of transport for escaping from the city at weekends. My car is a 20 year old BMW 5 Series (old, but robust as a tank). I've tried to find some information online about how to do this but so far, I've not had much luck. Can someone help me with the following please?

Do I need to register my car in Moldova, and if so, is this possible when the car is so old and how much would this cost?
Do I need to have it insured by a Moldovan insurance company?
The car is right hand drive - is this an issue?

If anyone can be of any help, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

Re-registering will be necessary unless you plan to constantly bribe yourself through the issue.

Moldova banned - like many other EE countries - the import of old clunkers above a certain age limit, but there may be an exception for people actually immigrating and taking their car with them (this usually is the only loophole). Inquire at the Moldovan consulate.

RHD should not be a problem. Insurance will be local once the car will be registered on Moldovan plates.

    Hi John

I've been to Moldova on many occasions; I'm Irish and my wife is Moldovan. I contacted my brother-in-law to confirm my suspicion that you cannot own a RHD car in Moldova, just a heads up before you take the plunge.

I don't believe RHD cars are banned in Moldova.
Rather it's prohibited to have RHD car registered there.

However I believe if you're not Moldovan citizen, and you're coming there as a foreign tourist, then you might be able to drive your Irish registered car there for a while (not sure if it might be up to half a year or shorter).
