My big brother is off to Japan for the rugby and has asked me to get him a travel guide.

He’ll be travelling around and looking for places of interest but not too high brow and places to eat that won’t break the bank.

    Any recommendations?

The Abroad in Japan and Simon and Martina channels are good places to start on youtube..

Japan Rail Pass before you travel to get around the country, flying can be reasonable as well.. plenty of low cost carriers.

As regards eating, there is so much choice. My personal favourites were CoCo Curry, and Ichiban. 7/11, Lawson and Family Mart are big convenience stores, they have literally everything you could need. 7/11 egg sandwiches are just heaven.. I'd go back just for them!

Thanks, I'll pass those on, but really he's looking for a book guide!

You can't really beat the lonely planet. You can also just buy the chapters that apply to you on a pdf from their website so you don't have to buy the whole book

He should ask a local for a recommendation of a place and a dish. It mightnt be the best food but it'll be more authentic and memorable.

It's an amazing country and very easy to navigate. I would just check and see when the guidebook was issued as things can change very quickly there

Going there myself next Thursday week for the Rugby also. I was there in 2002 for the FIFA World Cup. No matter how many guide books you will read, everything will just happen automatically, regarding socialising and meeting other fans, etc. Sightseeing on non match days could be organised alright.

Agree with this, was there in 2002 also, arrive at the airport and get your 2 week rail pass, after that, you can plan left, right and centre but I could nearly guarantee, most memories of the trip will come from things that were not planned...
