Dashed yellow lines

I was driving on the continent recently and was thinking how much better the solid white lines were on the hard shoulder and sides of roads. I found it much easier to see (maybe it's my ageing eyesight!).

What is the reason why we have yellow dashed lines in Ireland? Is it to save money on paint? :D.

Dashed lines on non motorway roads as you can use (park/drive on) the hard shoulder. Solid lines on motorways as you can't use the hard shoulder except in an emergency.

Yes, but why do we have to be different to most of Europe?

Because we ape the UK in such things, sadly.

But they also use white instead of yellow.

Our road signage and marking standards are far more based on the US than the UK and as pointed out the UK uses white for this
