Hi guys, I only have 2k to spend but there are some nice looking Audi A4s and BMW 3 series going for that price. They seem to have good milage for their age and seem to have been looked after.

    Are these cars reliable?

Would love a car like this but would it end up being expensive to maintain?

    Should I consider something else?

    Thanks for any info guys

You might want to give details of petrol diesel preference, what size engine you're thinking of, do you want manual or automatic, what's your driving need etc.

Would go for a petrol as I dont really do too many miles.

Would like to keep engine under 2 litre for insurance and tax.

No real preference between auto or manual.

    A €2k 2009 A4 will be a shed. You won’t get a good 2009 Ford Fiesta for €2k

BMW 2.0 diesels of that vintage have a reputation for timing chain failure which potentially could cost around 60% of your budget to replace. I'd be looking at a B7 A4 with the 1.9 TDI engine. It's an old school diesel engine and more robust than the more powerful 2.0 TDi and BMW diesel engines. With only a budget of 2k you will be looking at one with fairly hefty mileage but if it has a good service history it would be the safer bet. Stay clear of molested RS4 clones modified nearly beyond recognition that populate the likes of donedeal.

Short answer, no they’re not reliable at that age and they are expensive to maintain too.

    Is there such a thing as a 2009 2 grand Audi a4

I think the 2k thing is important.

How much money do you have lying around? Is 2k a massive budget decision that'll leave you broke? Or a few 'throwaway' euro that you don't mind throwing at a random car for the laugh and see how long it lasts?

You could well get years and years of hassle-free driving out of any 2k car. If you're just spending 2k for the lolzeroonies then just buy anything you like the look of. If it's a big decision financially, then maybe it might make more sense to look at a less 'premium' brand where you might get a better taken care of car for a good price, where repairs and parts, etc. won't cost the earth.

From my past experience.. I’ve owned an 04 1.6 petrol A3, and an 06 1.9 tdi Passat, essentially an Audi A4.. Both had over 100k miles and the only trouble I had on the Passat was the electric handbreak, which you won’t need to worry about on an A4. It was a solid engine.. But the A3 1.6 petrol needed a full engine rebuild and lots more. Spent over €1k trying to fix it and eventually traded it in.. Stick with a 1.9 tdi with a decent service history and you ‘should’ have trouble free motoring..
