Our 9 year old dog (collie x) has been coughing a lot and producing a bloody mucus. This started in June and continues without a medical explanation despite numerous vets visits. Treated initially with antibiotics and anti-inflam with no improvement, blood tests were clear and then x-rays which show swelling around the trachea but no tumours or anything specific. Fast forward to ultrasound scans which show some hypertension for which Cardisure was prescribed. Treatment for lung worm and Corvental also with no improvement. Vet has no more suggestions other than a UCD Vet referral. Has anybody any experience or recommendations? Thanks.

I'd recommend your vets advice and ring UCD today (not meaning to sound blunt or smart). Did you go to multiple vets or the same one? Qualified and experienced doesnt mean they keep up to date, UCD at least will be.

we are going to get a second opinion here (Galway) before we start thinking of UCD. It is very frustrating that after all the test that have been done so far that it is coming up inconclusive. Our dog's demeanor hasn't changed at all since before he started coughing up blood. His form is still good, no loss of appetite or anything else that might indicate illness.

any chance something like a piece of plastic stuck in there

it will not show up on xray

I would be asking for a scope at this stage

they have already done the scope. he has been thoroughly examined in fairness. the vet is hinting at going up to UCD but the costs involved are actually beyond our means, especially as we have spent almost a thousand to get to the stage we are at now.

as i said already, he is in pretty good shape except for this cough. no change in appetite or poops. he still has lots of energy and spends a good part running around at my work place. when he starts coughing it is obvious he is trying to get something up. he doesn't always but when he does it is like a bright blood red jelly that comes out. again, if this sounds in anyway familiar to anyone please let me know.
