Read brake pads A4 B6

I need new rear pads on my Audi A4 B6 and since it's the rear, you need a tool to turn back the pistons.

Would people trust the tyre replacement chains/franchises with such a job?

Or if I try to do it myself, could I get by without the tool?

Any mechanic can do rear brakes.

It is a medium DIY job as you need a jack, stands, the wind tool, pin grease and some more bits.
If you have no DIY experience I'd leave this to a mechanic, it's fast for them so quite cheap - 95 from this crowd https://quickfit.ie/brakes/

I was looking at the tyre fitters for convenience as they would do it while I wait. But I rang up and it's E90 (and E95 from your link, thanks)

I found the tool in Micks Garage for E24 so I'll do it myself. I've done pads and disks before, I was just put off by needing the tool.

    Thanks!

No problem once you have the wind back tool.
I've done them without in the past but I got sense and bought the basic tool for small money.
Once you go into the newer vw /audi with electric parking brake, you need vcds or similar to run the caliper motors in either direction before working on the rear brakes.

Since you're doing it yourself I'm moving the thread to the exclusive DIY forum :)

Good call. You will struggle to do a more half arsed job than most of those pitstop type places.

That sounds like a challenge :)

On a serious note, I got the pads and tool today so might do the job this weekend if I have time. I'm doing it for the NCT as it failed due to pad wear.

I think they will re-test the brakes and hand brake - I was thinking, should I delay the re-test to allow time for the pads to bed in, or is that needed?

I'd hate to fail again if I needed having to test with just 10 miles on the pads

Ye it takes a good while to bed in rear pads. I'd leave it a week or two.

The Brembo pads (P 85 020) seem to have an extra set of clips with them, I have not seen these on any of the several videos / guides I looked at. The Brembo site lists many different makes/models of cars it suits, can I assume they might just be needed for some brands other than my Audi?

It looks like if you remove the springs already attached to the pads they would fit in their place? Can I just ignore them?

It's ok definitely don't need those clips, just did one side.

Wind back tool little use as pegs too long, not fitting squarely on piston, so just used it to push and vice grips (I know....) to turn.

    Edit

All done now, here is a pic of how I used the wind back tool. I tightened it against the piston and got about a third of a turn with the vice grips, then took up the slack and repeat. Pretty fiddly but got the job done

On one of the shocks the rubber at the top was perished and the sleeve fell done, will the NCT fail that if they see it? No leak and it did well on the test last week
