Replacing laptop - worth self building?

Hi all, thanks in advance for any and all advice.

So, I currently have a poor old dell laptop that's prone to overheat if I run more than 2 programs at once and forgets the date if its unplugged. It was epic when I bought it back in early 2010, but has gone long past it's expected lifetime.

I'd like to replace it with something that can handle statistics and accounting software easily, would need Windows 10 probably, handle coursework and online streaming classes, downloading/storing movies/TV shows, and will hopefully last me another decade. My absolute maximum budget is €1000, ideally it wouldn't hit that.

I've been trying to research and think I would need minimum 8Gb RAM, intel core i5 or equivalent, 1Tb storage, wireless card and at least 17" screen.

My current laptop is 17.3“ screen, 1600x900 resolution, 500Gb storage, 4Gb RAM, intel core i3 330M 2.13GHz, so I want to go up a bit from all that.

My dilemma is whether to go for a pre-built desktop (which would also mean getting a monitor, keyboard and mouse), a laptop, some kind of custom build from a website like pc specialist, or to attempt a self build desktop myself! I'd be reasonably handy, but am unsure of the level of commitment involved in self building.

So, techie boardsies, what would you recommend doing and where's the best place to purchase that option?
