Where would the best ascents or hills be if youre cycling from the northside of the city (dublin 5). Apart from howth that is. Have cycled up the wicklow mountains but for winter am looking for somewhere a bit closer even an hour's ride away. Thanks

North West Co Dublin and South Meath will provide a few - Naul, Snowtown, Bellewstown - all within an hour of Dublin 5. (In saying that, they are not long climbs).

it was WA who pointed me to the climb from the coast up past ardgillan too; but bellewstown seems to be the richest hunting ground; i think there are seven roads you can approach it from, all offering a climb, albeit none much more than 100m.

the mullagh hill one is the most technical; much better to climb than to descend. my preferred option is to descend from the racecourse (via hilltown) and back up bellewstown bridge/mullagh hill.

Knockmaroon hill as you head from Palmerstown towards Lucan is a nice hill

Rugged Lane and Somerton Road would be the 2 I'd suggest around there. Short and sharp both of them. Sting the legs

D'Northside has Howth. D'Southside has everything else.

An hour would get you over to Rathfarnham, hang a left at the Yellow House pub and climb up to the viewing point at Killakee and onto the Fetherbeds with the option of going long from there.

even less; starting at donneycarney church, the bottom of the edmonstown road is only 13km away.

Phoenix Park - if you did four or five circuits of the Khyber that would be a fair bit of climbing and a safe environment for it.
