Paint and wall smell?

Painted a room with fresh paint recently and there was a bad smell coming from the walls. Had paint tested and it was fine. Tried onions everything. Anyway put on a coat of Bin (red tin) Primer. Smell gone. Painted one square of different paint over Primer smell returning. Is it a humidity problem, windows open in room for two weeks we even taped door to make sure no one went in to room and room could be ventilated without compromising rest of house. There is a problem we have found with a slate on the roof which could have let in moisture in to attic above. What do you think the problem is and what do we do?

What do you mean you had the paint tested?

It was tested by Dulux in their Cork plant. They said it was OK. I have now put some of the same paint, I got it returned to get it independently tested, on some plaster board.

Spent the morning working things out. Other paints and samples in other rooms OK for now. Good sign. I think. The emulsion paints in the spare room bad smell today every wall. The Johnson outdoor weather sealer on same walls no smell. So could the problem be humidity in air reaction with water based indoor paints. I think so. I need a hydrometer to check humidity and will get one next week and in the mean time paint wall with Johnsons. They have little or no smell. Humidifier might help.

Tried Crown and it smelled too after the Dulux. However the outdoor Johnsons weather sealer right beside it on the same wall did not.

It was. Some damp. Dehumidifier in. Outdoor weather paint works but paint smell lasts longer

Get the SDS for the paint. Any substances of concern will be listed on that. Most matt indoor paint is grand but gloss paints can be hazardous.
