European public broadcasters and Saorview

Professor John Walsh makes an intriguing suggestion within a wide-ranging Irish Times article, where he proposes having a slot on Saorview for programmes from a range of European public broadcasters, subtitled in the TG4 manner. While that may not itself be practical, could individual broadcasters themselves, such as ARTE/TV5 for French, and similar stations in other languages be added through agreements with other governments?

A Polish channel would probably have the most appeal, but I'd imagine rights issues would it make it difficult.

That would be great if it could happen.

TV5 monde already have a free live stream online to UK & Ireland so it seems like something that could appeal to them.

    Who's paying for it?

That was my first thought. This where OTT HbbTV could be an option, probably much cheaper than standard multiplexing and transmission.

Won’t happen precisely because someone has to pay for it, these other European broadcasters won’t see any commercial benefit (many of them don’t air commercials) from paying the hefty Saorview rate card.

Back in days long past, Cablelink ran a nighttime slot on their Link channel where they aired news bulletins from ZDF, RAI, and TVE. Again, someone has to pay for it and run it with no anticipation of any revenue.

I remember that Cablelink slot. It looked like the segments were recorded on VHS tape then played back manually. Probably not much automation back then!

the most likely source of funding might be the EU in the name of cross border co-operation, but it would probably be easier and cheaper for them to legislate for cross-border streaming services.

They would have to use Irish advertising ,depending on what satellite you are using to watch TV5monde or Arte either Astra 1 19e or Hotbird 13e .They use French or Geman advertising . Two good channels for documentaries but most of time the default audio is either French or German depending what satellite you are watching it from .Programs
do have English audio and broadcast in English.Yes they would be good addition to Saorview in HD ,as they are in HD on satellite
