Any point changing test centre from Cork to Skibb which has a higher pass rate?

    Hi there,

I have 11 out of 13 lessons completed in and around Cork city with the intension of doing the test in the city also.

I'm struggling with remaining calm and collected in the city driving (instructor is not helping!). I read that there is an 8% higher pass rate in Skibereen, not too far from me. I was thinking of sitting my test there instead of in the city. I now plan to do my remaining 2x lessons in Skibb to get a feel of the town.

Just seeking advice on whether there is any point to swap at this late stage? I've heard that Skibb is pretty straightforward compared to the city.

    Any tips much appreciated!

Which would you prefer to be ... A driver who is confident and capable of driving in the city or one who is confident and capable of driving in small towns etc,

Driving is driving, it's mainly confidence, knowing your car and the rules of the road, if you are good enough you will pass, it's not the end of the world if you don't get it, it can be taken plenty of times.

If my memory is correct the easiest test is done in Ennis, it's pretty much a one way road system in the town, it doesn't mean you will pass, it means the tester will be looking for different things like observations etc,

I did my test in cork (granted 20yrs ago) but if I had a choice.. I would do it in a city to ensure I was a better driver going out on the road on my own.

I would suggest you get your instructor to take you over the usual routes that the test covers, familiarity brings confidence, the more confident you are the better your test is likely to go.

    Ps. Best of luck.

I'd be of the opposite opinion. Get the test done where it is easiest. You have plenty of time to get comfortable driving in the city without the pressure of a driving test. Do it where you feel most comfortable.

You should go to the place which makes you feel most confident to pass the test

    You've answered your own question

You're the one who has to drive.

No matter where you do it, the best piece of advice is to remember it's not a driving test. It's a safety test. Observation, observation, observation.

Thanks for your input, everyone. Really appreciate it. I've had plenty to think about. I agree that you should be able to drive capably in city, town or countryside. However, for the sake of the time and money involved in resitting, I'll opt for the one with the higher pass rate.

By Cork you mean the Wilton test centre? I know someone who passed their test in Skibbereen he said it was pretty much just spending much of the rest of the rest stuck in traffic.

I’ve done 2 tests in Ballincollig and passed them both as well but I think that’s Buses/trucks/bikes only or at least it was. Mallow is another handy one.

Just remember, because Skibbereen has an 8% pass rate does not guarantee you will pass on the day. Each test throws up a whole host of different scenarios. Also the time of day has a big impact, schools, rush hour etc.

    Best of luck with it
