Just limbering up to put another motor through a VRT inspection and can’t help thinking what a b****x of a process.

A total waste of taxpayers money having these folks from Applus giving the car the once over in person.

Appreciate some have taken the p*** in the past but why like other taxes is it not self reported, processed remotely and spot checked by revenue with punitive fines if found to be false?

Seems a self reporting system would be a handy way to ring cars.

" do you promise that's the real vin of the car"
    " yes, sir, I do"

Plus cars would be going around registered as whatever the cheapest version is to vrt.

They’re physically checking the car to make sure it’s what the papers say it is.
I was in and out in 20 mins, what’s the problem?

Would be open to abuse and would cost a fortune to then police.

If you look at the rampant abuse of crew cab exemption for SUV's you will see where it can go.

Revenue use to do it and it took hours at times to sit in a reception on uncomfortable seats and eventually be seen.....

    Much better system now.

I have VRT'd 5 or 6 cars since Applus took over from Revenue. Its a 20 minute process and the lady in our local office is nice and friendly. She has zero interest or knowledge on cars and readily admits it, the only thing she checks in the VIN number against the V5 and the mileage on the odometer. Everything else is taken from the V5 or the form you fill in. So its not like they inspect the car and give it a good going over, its a 2 minute physical inspection and inputting details on to a computer. I don't see what the problem with it is.

Yes it was a little like the motor tax office of old, think they closed for lunch and you got the impression they were not really arsed being there.

Don't see an issue. Although they couldn't find the VIN on my friends A6 and I was almost late for work :P

It's to make sure your not trying to VRT a Porsche with the registration document from a Micra. Like many things in Ireland self reporting would just lead to dog's abuse by the many cute hoors out there.

Why the need to see the car? Because even when people have to physically bring the car in they try to be deceitful so can you Imagine the amount of it would happen if the car wasn't inspected.

Also VIN numbers are often incorrect on the V5's, be it DVLA typing error or the wrong V5 altogether and this is spotted at inspection. Stamped VINs have been doctored completely too.

The system is good, obviously some small flaws, but it works.

In the UK the car has to pass an MOT to be registered, and then paperwork has to be sent to the DVLA. Can take weeks to get the registration number. At least here, you get it on the day in most cases.
