    No takers huh?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,055 ✭✭✭selectamatic

For me it'd have to be the gs.

Reliable, nice place to be and serious value to be had here.

Truckermal on here sold his one out to Amsterdam for a good price on eBay after he had no local takers at circa 2k iirc on donedeal.

With the gs you could export it and use it for however long ya stay in Poland and if the time comes that ya wanna move back to Ireland you could most likely just sell for a profit before ya move back and buy something else here again.

Personally I'd go with the v70 followed by the v50. The 2.4 diesel from volvo are meant to be quite solid with lots of torque. The s40/v50 is quite comfortable in the drivers seat imo so I'd imagine the v70 is even better. Wouldn't be keen on either of the Audi's as there probably the cvt box.

Think that Superb was posted in the bangornomics thread last week, surprised to still see it up.

Yeah Im leaning more and more towards the GS but I'm pretty sure that won't last long which is annoying.
Doesn't seem to be much online as to issues with it and they also appear to be quite ok fuel wise if driven ok.
The Skoda I quite like as well, it's just really annoying that there is no temporary insurance in Ireland.

    Are the CVT boxes bad?

There known as not being the greatest box out there. Some say that when there not giving issues there quite good with the TDI's due to low end torque. I was driving an 1.8t A5 with one for a short while a few months back and found it very unexciting, nor the quickest.

I see, that lowers my potential count then :)
Would you also advocate the GS?

Wouldn't know much about them. Sorry.

So the car I was interested in the most is no longer available but the Volvo 2.5 is and there is also a Saab 95 2.0t.
Anyone have an experience of the Saab? It's an automatic as well

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

The Saab is an antique at this stage.

Would you consider an E60 530d with 300k miles? But will be slightly below budget too

Yeah but don't mind at this stage.
As long as there is some power in it.
Still hoping the turbo s80 hangs about

Depends tbh, slightly above budget or below? :D
    Any more info on it?

€2400 :D It's mine, and it's carbon black (so it's navy) with cream leather but needs a serious polishing :pac:

    Far over :D
Unfortunately it's a bit over cause I need to bring it back over with me so my budget is quite tight with everything

Is anyone able to tell me if this is a 5 speed or 6 speed box?
I just can't tell from the pictures, would rather it to be 6 speed as it makes it a 130.

    Thats a 115 5speed

Most if not all six speed 07 superbs would have the 2.0tdi 140 engine.

Eh I was afraid it would be the lower power engine

Good that you're open to big tax, opens up lots of lovely cars! I'll stick with the petrol recommendations for now :D

My money would go on the best XJ6 I could find, generally reliable and absolutely gorgeous:
    https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/jaguar-x-type-3-0-vl-sovereign/22642651

I've had a GS300 Sport, they're great cars but lack "fizz" in my opinion.
This one looks like a bargain: https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/06-gs300-sport-new-nct/22781653

I much preferred my e60 (although the 2.5 is a bit underpowered):

The internet never seemed to like them but these are very underrated cars in my opinion, we've run one for years:

    e38s are glorious:

Was gonna suggest an S Type too. I had a 3.0 before I got the Civic and loved it. It’s hilariously dated now but is still an understated respectable car. They’re great value too.

I was closer to pitching a 1.5k price and see what he says :)

Yes I saw that black one for sale in Dublin but I'm really unfamiliar with the brand so I don't know if I want to take the risk.

Look at some of the cars you’ve bought!

Can't tarnish all my history after the Lancia , Honda and Passat :D
Oh and that's exactly why I don't fancy the risk again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,055 ✭✭✭selectamatic

There's plenty of risk with the Volvo's too unfortunately.

Someone on here got very unlucky with one of those 2.5t s80's. Think it was supergurrior.

    https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/lexus-gs300/22802281

This looks good for the price.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,866 ✭✭✭✭bear1

Yeah I'd seen that one but fairly far away unfortunately.
Do you happen to recall what it was about the S80 that was so bad?
Reviews online say it's not a bad all-rounder so I suppose like with any car it's all down to luck.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,055 ✭✭✭selectamatic

Oil seal at the back of the engine going and contaminated the timing belt both had to be replaced, some sensor stuff and then the alternator belt failed and fecked up the timing again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,866 ✭✭✭✭bear1

    But apart from that...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,866 ✭✭✭✭bear1

There's also an is250 for sale but the reviews are mixed when it comes to the dealer and I hate the whole last price no offers sold as seen script they give.
    Aggressive.

    https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/06-subaru-outback-2-5-automatic-4wd-huge-spec/22686400

Can barely find any info on these engines but the price drop is a bit of a strange one.
50% off.. wonder what's wrong with it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

It was overpriced to start with.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,866 ✭✭✭✭bear1

    Thoughts on the car itself?
Wrecking my head trying to find a proper car with the requirements.
Automatic, petrol and with some power doesn't give a lot of results for max 2k..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,019 ✭✭✭davycc

Any thoughts on upping the budget slightly Mr bear for this absolute weapon?..

    Wouldn't be possible at all.
The car will be exported so it restricts a lot as we are also saving for a deposit.
I've a few appointments on Friday and tomorrow I'm seeing that Subaru.
On Friday a Saab 95 turbo and then in the afternoon a lexus is.
Lexus is at the max of the budget and with a dealer so not a hope I'd manage to talk him down to 1.5k :/

I'd consider 2k on the nose for the 530 if it so interests :P

Ah yeah? Ok cool so I'll try and still talk ya down :D

    Update this now.
Ended up buying a 2006 outback 2.5 with a full service history and nct until December for 950e.
Tight as a drum, suspension and engine are simply perfect.
Silky smooth engine and on the drive back from Dublin averaged about 7.5
    Happy with it
