external insulation-removing plastic strips

Hi We had external insulation done around a year ago. There are plastic strips around the edges with i think are to be removed. But the plastic is quite hard & tough. I had a go with a Stanley knife, but im worried im going to damage the insulation or my windows. Is there a proper way to get rid of these? Thanks Cookie
