Hey folks, I’ve a 16 year old Honda Civic saloon and looking to upgrade. I’ve the loan got and looking to spend between €10-15. I’m 31 and have no kids so wouldn’t mind something reliable but at the same time fun. I’ve been looking at a few Octavia VRSs online. Can prob get a 131-141 in my budget with about 130k in the clock. Good choice? Any negatives I should look out for? I’m pretty open to suggestions and have looked at a4s and a3 salons as well. Thanks for looking.

    Anyway..

OP, have a look at the Seat Leon FR also, same running gear as the Octavia vRS but they tend to be a bit cheaper and better looking imo.

This is what I'd be looking at:

Second on Leon, great car and with a bit of a sporty edge but still massively practical.

Am I imagining things or have I seen that Dacia sandero post before?

I'd 3rd the Leon. Excellent value and a sportier drive than the Octavia. The 184 engine is a dinger and that one has a nice spec (pan roof, full link)

That Leon has some nice stuff like Seat Sound and the glass roof.
I think the 5 door hatchback version of these looks a bit clumsy. I’d be looking at the estate myself as it’s much more elegant. If practicality isn’t a concern look at the SC.

You'll see them everywhere during the upcoming recession and BREXT.

Back to the good aul days of actually having a conversation in the car (no radio in Sandero Access) and losing weight (manual windows and mirrors)

You're going to have to give it a rest with that. I'll be viewing it as trolling from here on out. You know full well that the OP would have no interest in this kind of car from their comment and it's doing nothing but derailing this (any many other) threads where people are seeking genuine advice.

Thanks for the advice everyone. Unfortunately I can’t grgett insured on a vrs as apparently I have to have 5 years no claims bonus for this spec of car and been out of the country until last year means I’ve only the one. Annoying.

    Did you try any brokers?
Gmhd or try the companies listed in the Insurance section on boards.

Brokers are as bad as the insurance companies now. I checked every broker and insurance company last year for my car and no broker could beat my renewal. Most refused to quote and one poor call center person got all flustered when they did a call back, 2 days before the time I selected for the call back, when the computer said No as my car came back with no quote. I've 20 years no claims and I drive a GS450h.

OP you can force a quote by going to the ombudsman, the first company that rejected you has to quote you.

Again thanks for the advice everyone, really apricated. I am one month into my current policy at the moment with a well known broker. Any thoughts on this folks?

Seems like a well looked after car. Decent spec? Wonder what I would get it for and if they would take my old civic off my hands at all? Wishful thinking maybe.

Spec is good, I’d normally say go with the 2.0 but I know my insurance went up when I changed from a 1.8 Civic to a 2.0 Octavia, so yours will too. The 150 wouldn’t be as bad as the 184 to insure though.

It’s a nice car, but it’s not exactly cheap either.

I had one of those, was fine but soooooooo boring. 5 speed gearbox was a pain in the hole on motorways too.

If I was early 30s with no kids I'd be looking at the Leon or A3 before committing to that

An A3 is equally boring I’m afraid. I looked into them when I was buying and they’re not even on a par with the Golf IMO.

Would you do an import ... even if just from across the border ?

If you are thinking Skoda then I wonder if warranty from NI is honoured in RoI ?

A few NI Skoda dealers :

    https://johnmulhollandmotors.com/skoda/used-cars?page=1&carmake=1&carmodel=461

    https://www.mervynstewart.com/used-cars/?Make=30&Model=988&min_pr=&max_pr=&min_monthly=&max_monthly=&Fuel=&Gearbox=&Year=&Location=

    https://www.howardabraham.com/used-cars/?Make=30&Model=988&min_pr=&max_pr=&min_monthly=&max_monthly=&Fuel=&Gearbox=&Year=

( skoda.co.uk used to have a great site for searching for used Skodas. It looks like they have improved it so much that it is now unusable - but maybe thats just me - give it a try yourself )

I'd agree regards driving but the nicer interior may be a factor and an S-line saloon looks better than an Octavia

Agreed, it’s a neat looking car, but the S line in a saloon is still poorly equipped and overvalued. I couldn’t find even one used A3 in my local Audi dealer that had lumbar support on the seats, and most were 1.6 diesels.
