Brother is looking for a car, I can't find anything suitable on DD at all, what am I missing?

    Requirements are:

    2008+ (Cheap tax)
    Auto.
    Estate.
    Petrol.
Must be able to comfortably pull a trailer.

He's adamant it has to be a petrol, if he considered a diesel there's the world of cars that fit the criteria out there.

Donedeal just throws up all the Toyota/Nissan jap 1.5 cars, C class Mercs with high tax, BMW 318i's, KIA Rio's etc.

Does such a car even exist?

No. Automatic petrols of decent size and tax are much newer affairs than the budget allows.

I was trying to say that to him. He's absolutely dead set on getting a petrol again, every time he got a diesel he had EGR, injector, turbo problems... to be fair he's not wrong.

    He is after a unicorn.
A Donedeal search of that criteria with budget of 6K shows 11 hits and most are cars that aren't suitable.

What towing capacity is he after?

Civic hybrid? Even pre 2008 it’s only 1.4 tax

    Ooh. Estate.
What does he want an estate for?
    What’s the budget

    And a trailer?!

It’s just what I was thinking. Such a car doesn’t exist!

I know the 318i is 390 tax, don't know if there's a big difference. It's going to be a bit more with vrt and the reliability might be questionable and it looks like a Jap import.

What he is looking for just doesn't exist in Ireland, he will either have to up his budget or drop one of those conditions.

Another issue is that a lot of the more recent Petrol Autos are really DSG's (manual Twin-clutch 'boxes pretending to be Autos). Most are not over-fond of Towing much more than 500kg.....only anecdotal, rather than direct experience.

He likes that but you've to put 1000 into it straight away for a chain...just to be safe.

You get someone to check it over and keep the grand if it doesn't need it;)

If you could find a BMW 530i (E60) it would probably tick all the boxes (if you think €750 is cheap for tax).

You could probably import one easily enough but finding one in Ireland will be hard.

Example from the UK for £5400

If they were willing to go a little older there is a 2004 Subaru Legacy GT (280bhp) for sale in Clare at the moment for €3850.

Subaru is nice but it's a manual

And 04 and not cheap to tax...

I read the OP as the only reason they were looking at 2008+ was to avail of the cheaper tax.

Either way, I don't think you will find anything that has 200bhp+ for less than €700 tax under the new or old tax regimes unless you at least triple the budget.

For example, the 530i would be €1400 under the old tax band and conversely the Legacy would be at least €1200 under the new regime.

Regardless, compromises will be necessary to come close to the requirements of the OP.

I think something that is closest to the requirements would be 2008 accord estate auto 2.0...

How many of them around? Probably very few...

    E91 320i touring?

    https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/bmw-320i-m-sport-auto/22131740

Looks nice but overpriced IMO considering it needs VRT but I think these were 560 tax PA? You'd have to fit a towbar also.

Are many petrols of that era, and of a size fit to move an estate and tow, cheaper tax on the Co2 system than they were on cc?

Jap import. Add VRT, not sure about VAT.

Its landed so I presume the duty is paid. The ad says VRT is due.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. So far none of the suggestions are quite it. Not a reflection on you guys. He’s just looking for a unicorn. Currently trying to convince him to go diesel.

For reference he’s in a 2008 mondeo 1.6 petrol, so the likes of a 2006 Impreza are very wide of the mark.

Chancery - suspiciously cheap for the year and the advert says the NCT is out since last February but checking the nct website says it's not due until Feb 2020. Not far off the top end budget:
