Experiences with mental health care in Ireland

    Hi everyone,

My experiences with the public mental health services in Ireland, and what I hear anecdotally, are generally awful.

From the "leading eating disorder specialist" who told my 19 year old self that he knew I'd be grand because my eyes were sparkly and described what was at the time a debilitating mental illness as an "old git"... to the absolute hell of bullying, gaslighting and procrastinating my parents have been put through from a very self-serving HSE mental health team who have yet to come up with a functional plan for my severely mentally ill sibling. who has been bounced around from inadequate service to inadequate medication programme for almost 2 decades now.

Now, mental health issues are a minefield and i appreciate that it can take many, many years and many false starts to find something that works for the individual. you really have to work at it.

but based on my experiences, it can largely feel like the people that have the most important role of caring for our most vulnerable largely 1. don't care and 2. will do whatever it takes to protect their own asses.

am I alone in this? I'd love to hear other people's stories.
