Recalibrate leaf sat nav

    Hi

I'm a recent owner of a gen 1 leaf so apologies if this is a newbie question.

All is going great with the leaf but there is one niggle. The arrow on the sat nav seems to be off by approx 5 to 10mm (on the screen - not the road!) .

E.g. If I was stopped at the tip of a T-junction then the the tip of the arrow would be below the T-junction by a fair bit. Turning at the T-junction puts the arrow off-road temporarily and then it moves back onto the road but it is still not positioned correctly.

It's very annoying when trying to determine when to turn.

Any suggestions as to how to recalibrate it?

I have connected the Leaf to a Nissan account and I can remotely see charge data so I _assume_ that map data is up to date.

    Thanks in advance. Cheers.

Maps aren't updated over the air. You've to buy new ones on SD card from Nissan.

    Thanks!

At approx €200 for a map update I think I'll stick with Sygic on my phone.

It's a pity but it's no problem. Cheers.

That's poor service from Nissan. At Hyundai they update the software and the maps for free as part of the annual service.

...which costs 500 (Nissan dealer told me) and the latest version of maps is only 2015 (or 16).
Better get the SD card updated by a fella in Dublin who supposedly does that.

It seems that they cost approx €210. See here (just in case anyone else is thinking of upgading).

From my perspective, after thinking about it I'm not even entirely convinced that a map update will help. A lot of the roads that I am on are "established" (i.e. not new) so I think it's the GPS positioning unit rather than the maps.

I could obviously be wrong but I'm not going to spend that money to find out. I might take it to a Nissan dealer for the next service and see if a borrowed card might identify the issue. As I say, it's not a deal breaker - just convenience.

I don't really understand how it's an issue, at a T junction it's telling you to turn right or left, at a roundabout telling you which exit to take etc.

    Not ideal of course

    A T-junction isn't an issue.

It's driving and looking for which left (for example) to take. When I'm in an area that I'm not familiar with I'd prefer the navigation software to be accurate. I don't think that's too much to expect!

Could you post a picture of it where it’s wrong?

Will do. I'll try to put something up tomorrow morning.

    Cheers.

Using Google maps has huge advantages over the Nissan Sat nav. Accurate, regular updates Foc. I've been driving a leaf for a few years, and prefer Google maps, especially when paired with Bluetooth. There is voice recognition on Nissan Sat nav, but unfortunately only for UK place names. Voice recognition works for Irish place names on G maps

Here's two pictures. The first is when I'm stopped at a t-junction and you can see that the arrow is off.

    REMOVED

The 2nd is a (poor) image showing that there is a left turn ahead but by the time I think I'm at the turn I've actually passed it. (Especially if I was in an unfamiliar area with lots of roads/entries to turn into). Namely, the turn is very close from a driver's perspective and the sat-nav seems to show the turn as further away.

    REMOVED

Just to re-iterate. I can get passed this problem through Sygic/Google Maps etc. It would just be nice to have the system working as expected.

    Cheers

Clutching at straws a little here but might be worth a try.

From the pics you appear to be in 3D mode. That stretches out the view and gives you a horizon effect so maybe thats throwing you/it out?

    Try this...

On the right of the screen hit MapMenu-->MapSettings-->Planview

That will put it in 2D mode and see if its any better and let us know.

Other than that, there is a secret advanced menu that allows you to play with low level settings that are supposed to be only done by a dealer. Lets see how the 2D view works first and I'll see if I can remember/find that secret menu option.

    Much appreciated. Cheers.

See if they're still doing that when the Ioniq is over 8 years old and outdated.

Of course they will if you are still servicing your car there (unlikely in my case - probably do it myself once the car is out of warranty, no doubt you can get hacked maps online somewhere)

I doubt it somehow. The maps come from TomTom and they charge the manufacturer for those.

In a new car car you typically get 3 years free map updates but you pay beyond that. Check the small print!

I cant see any manufacturer giving you free map updates for life unless the service is €300!!!

You're sharing your full name Mark, just FYI.

50M is rather far in, I cycle at 100-200m for example. If the problem occurs when driving in different cardinal directions it's a software behaviour and not a loss of calibration.

I've never had a need to use waypoints but this link seems to imply that it can be done https://createweb.be/plan-your-gps-route-for-sygic-on-the-computer/

For me, I used to do a lot of night driving and Sygic has a mode where it projects simple directions onto your windscreen. Sounds mad but it was _really_ nice to use. It was a one off payment of approx a tenner for that.

No luck with the 2D view unfortunately kcross but it was worth a shot. Thanks.

Thanks on the personal data - removed ;)

Ok, I'll try zooming out a bit and report back. Might be late tonight before I get a chance. Cheers.

You could very well be right, Hyundai uses TomTom too. I have no service plan yet both my services were free and included software and mapping updates :)

    Hi all.

Zooming out has made things better.

It's still not as accurate/timely as phone apps but it's definitely an improvement.

Thanks for all the advice and suggestions. Cheers.

FWIW if the car is say 5yrs old the procurement for its ICE/Nav kit will be more like 8yrs and so on. When you divide that time by the 18mo phone cycle its like using a Galaxy S1 in 2019.

This is why Carplay/Android Auto have huge potential, smart parts in the car rapidly become dumb.
